Source: NBC
A man was shot Monday evening at a demonstration where protesters planned to topple a conquistador's statue in Albuquerque, New Mexico, authorities said.
It wasn't immediately clear who had been shot. Albuquerque police said in a statement that one person had been taken to a hospital in critical condition but that there were no other injuries.

Reports on Twitter that there was a right-wing armed militia group there "protecting" the statues and one of them shot a protester.

I wrote the first line of this response after only reading the first line of your response. Then I looked up and saw the rest of your response, which wasn't funny but unkind. Why would you post something like this? Chill. Or at least take a moment to consider the important place that conquistadors hold in our history and recognize satire without an emoji to help you out.

(8,020 posts)and will probably escape the more serious charges, New Mexico is the type of stand your ground state where you do not have a duty to retreat. You don't have to retreat, but if you don't, the DA may decide to prosecute, and the judge/jury may decide to convict. He tried to retreat so it may protect him.

(18,632 posts)Having seen many get burned.
The man in the video did retreat from the crowd after an initial assault. He was followed a assaulted by multiple people.
He could be charged if he initiated something in the crowd but the shooting is going to be self defense.

(18,770 posts)Albuquerque police detain members of the New Mexico Civil Guard, an armed civilian group, following the shooting of a man during a protest over a statue of Spanish conquerer Juan de Oñate on Monday in Albuquerque. (Adolphe Pierre-Louis/AP)

Protesters in Albuquerque wrapped a chain around the neck of a bronze statue and began tugging, chanting, Tear it down, shortly before sunset on Monday. Their efforts to pull down a monument of Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate suddenly stopped as four shots rang out.
Most people instinctively turned toward the noise, videos from the scene show. A few screamed. Just yards away, a group of militia men sporting militarylike garb and carrying semiautomatic rifles formed a protective circle around the gunman.
The gunshots, which left one man in critical but stable condition, have set off a cascade of public outcry denouncing the unregulated militias presence and the shooting, although police have yet to announce an arrest or describe exactly what happened. The victim is also unidentified.
The heavily armed individuals who flaunted themselves at the protest, calling themselves a civil guard, were there for one reason: To menace protesters, to present an unsanctioned show of unregulated force, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) said in a statement. To menace the people of New Mexico with weaponry with an implicit threat of violence is on its face unacceptable; that violence did indeed occur is unspeakable.
