Some Tennessee lawmakers stop amendment to hide statue of former KKK leader

Source: Fox17 Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Some members of the Tennessee General Assembly moved to table an amendment to the state budget which would have blocked a statue of former KKK leader Nathan Bedford Forest from the view of drivers on I-65.

Sponsored by Rep. Jason Powell (D-Nashville), Amendment 8 to HB2922 would have appropriated funds to the Tennessee Department of Transportation to plant donated trees and natural landscaping to block the statue of Nathan Bedford Forest.

Forrest was the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and Confederate general during the Civil War. The statue has been defaced with paint in the past and a subject of debate in recent years. Speaking on the House floor Wednesday, Rep. Powell said blocking the statue from view would send "a clear message to people in the state of Tennessee" and called it an "important step."

2. That monstrosity is a joke

It's was a terrible statue to begin with, and I mean the actual statue, not the terrible content. It looks like a wax model that someone stuck in the microwave. It received a lovely upgrade in the form of pink paint a few years ago. The owner of the statue hasn't bothered cleaning it up.

3. Isn't that the guy 'Forrest Gump' was named after?

I remember Sally Field telling young Forrest something and IIRC they showed a statue of the guy... if that's the guy, then is that the statue being discussed?

4. Forrest City, Arkansas is - you guessed it - named for Nathan Bedford Forest.

Forrest City is majority African American - by a lot. No, I don't know why the name has never been changed.
