NASCAR says noose found in Bubba Wallace's garage stall at Talladega
Source: Marketwatch
TALLADEGA, Ala. A noose was found in the garage stall of Black driver Bubba Wallace at the NASCAR race in Alabama on Sunday, less than two weeks after he successfully pushed the auto racing series to ban the Confederate flag at its tracks and facilities.
NASCAR announced the discovery late Sunday and said it had launched an immediate investigation. It said it will do everything possible to find who was responsible and eliminate them from the sport.
We are angry and outraged, and cannot state strongly enough how seriously we take this heinous act, the series said in a statement. As we have stated unequivocally, there is no place for racism in NASCAR, and this act only strengthens our resolve to make the sport open and welcoming to all.
Wallace is the only fulltime Black driver in NASCARs elite Cup Series. On Twitter, he said the the despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened and serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism.

The Figment
(494 posts)My personal take on this...if it turns out that the person who did is a member of another team then the entire team should be suspended for the rest of the year, all driver and owner points taken away, this includes owner, crew chief, drivers, cars and the team number also as well as a $250,000 fine...and the perp should be fired and brought up on charges.

(9,998 posts)The team should be Expelled from the sport. If you hire someone like that, it is a direct reflection upon yourself.
They should be banned from Nascar forever.
The Figment
(494 posts)Doesn't mean the whole team is...that is the same thinking that the Trumpers use...one asshole breaks a Starbucks window and everyone is ANTIFA or Black Blok...
Sorry just my opinion.

(2,502 posts)The punishment should be so insanely over the top that anyone else wouldn't dream of trying it again, and I agree with you 100%. No lifetime ban on anybody but the perpetrator and then bring hate crime charges. Lots of expensive equipment lying around, not to mention the cars, so they should have cameras. Whether they were on or not is the question.
The Figment
(494 posts)And that "bending"the rules are a part of the sport you would think that security would be up there as well.
Hell when a "stock" car cost approximately $3-5 million to develop, build and run...well ya'll would think there would be a camera or two.

(35,300 posts)same punishment? Because the assumption is that that one person didn't act alone and by doing so victimize not only the one team but also his own, but the entire team bears responsibility for him. It spreads responsibility.
I'd find that even more egregious, but I suspect most people will look at the situation and give him mostly a pass. Perhaps narrow the punishment to just the person who did it and say that the person victimized the team. In any case, people wouldn't want to be spreading the responsibility around to the wrong people.
The asymmetry's immoral.

I could be wrong, but I hope not.

(3,322 posts)Surely NASCAR has security surveillance at their facilities. Lifetime ban and federal hate crimes should result

(65,000 posts)With the value of what's in those garages, they MUST have cameras. The cars are worth a million.
Tools & scopes are worth a quarter million.
The car set ups are secrets to the team.
And, they're going to let all that be unsecured by a few $100 cameras?
Doubtful.

(50,555 posts)NASCAR sells pit passes at its events. If you have one, you can go to the garage area but not into the stalls. (I have not bought one because they are expensive, but I think next year I will get one for Sonoma.) This was the first race since the pandemic started that had fans in attendance.
Having said that, NASCAR does not play around when it comes to wrongdoing by team members. If it was a crew member or a driver, they will smoke that person out and cause him great pain.

Fans can buy a pit pass which allows a person on pit road during practice and qualifying, but garage passes are not available for sale.
With NASCAR races being run with no spectators and limited to essential race personnel only, this was not a fan. When they say essential, they really mean it. Even the race and broadcast teams have a limited number of people allowed in compared to usual
This was most likely a crew member or track security
Edit to add that there is always the possibility this was a false flag incident

(11,912 posts)It is limited to 5000 and the track seats 80k in the grandstands.
They are limiting to specific seating areas and ensuring people are separated if not from the same group
There is no infield or general admission

(10,749 posts)remains gracious even after this.
I saw an interview with him talking about the issue of banning the confederate flag. He spoke very highly of NASCAR leadership and the discussions they had on the issue. And it would seem that they were sincere, given their reaction to this incident. And yet Wallace, at least publicly, remains above the fray. After all, I suppose, he knows who these people are - racists and white supremacists to their core. All he wants to do is drive and make things in his world a little better, more humane, more decent.
All of that said, I do hope he puts up video cameras.

(13,036 posts)equipment supporting them are so expensive. Bubba Wallace is a class act. I hope going forward that Nascar and Richard Petty's company will be providing him protection.
