Another Shooting at Seattle's Protest 'Autonomous Zone'

Source: The New York Times

SEATTLE — Another night of gunfire at Seattle’s protester-led “autonomous zone” sent one person to the hospital with injuries, the second round of gun violence over the weekend in an area where officers had pulled out of the police station.

Susan Gregg, a spokeswoman at Harborview Medical Center, said one person who had been shot in or near the zone was brought by private vehicle for treatment late Sunday night. The victim was in serious condition, Ms. Gregg said. The Seattle Police Department said it was investigating a reported shooting inside the zone.

On Saturday morning, separate shootings left a 19-year-old man dead and another in critical condition.

The zone was declared this month in the wake of clashes between protesters and the police after the death of George Floyd, a black man whose death in police custody in Minneapolis touched off protests around the globe.

Capitol Hill has seen a spike in crime over the last few years. I am sure it is worse now without cops.

if there were any other shootings in Seattle, outside the zone. I don't have any idea of the size of the city, but in large cities ,nightly shootings are not unusual. In Charlotte NC its
a rare night that no shooting takes place and not unusual for multiple shootings to occur.

Each barricade has a car that can easily move out of the way to let emergency vehicles in if they are needed. If they aren't needed, they won't move.

I would expect anarchy to reign.

These people are not our friends. Anarchist have hovered around rightful protest for years. Causing problems. They hate democrats as much as they hate everyone else.

The last thing the Democratic Party needs to do is lend support to the folks.

Let me join in with some speculation based on living in this city for 30 years:

BOTH these shootings will be tied back to gang activity and young men who knew that their targets were in this limited area, rather than somewhere else in Seattle a city of >800K in a region of >3 million.

Not Anarchists. Not the Proud Boys.

The Pike/Pine Corridor in Capitol Hill is NOT a "High-Crime Area". It was, prior to Covid-19, the center of the city's nightlife and Gay and alternative culture. There's a longtime Lesbian bar, the Wild Rose. Several Gay Bars. REI started there. There are great restaurants there, great coffee shops, great record shops. Apartments. Rock clubs.

Within a couple of hours of the first shooting, the Socialist Alternative member of the city council involved with CHOP put out a statement averring that it was a right-wing attack (because what else could it be?) brought on by Trump's rhetoric and hate.

When you have the truth, it seems, you don't really need to wait for any investigation.

He shot the got who reached in his car to try to stop him, then ran to the police lines. That was before #CHOP.

The 2nd shooting was 2 men getting shot in a drive by.

This 3rd shooting is another drive-by.

BTW, her name is Kshama Sawant. Please use her name. Her 1st name is pronounced "Shama".
