Texas governor says coronavirus spreading at 'unacceptable rate;' experts warn of Fourth of July holiday
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src&w691
New coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in Texas are increasing at an accelerated and "unacceptable" rate, yet shutting down the state again remains a last resort, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said Monday.

Speaking at a news conference, Abbott said Texas is now averaging about 3,500 new cases a day, compared to only 1,500 new cases in the last half of May. Additionally, the rate of positive tests has gone up to more than 9 percent.

Abbott reiterated Monday that masks are still not required statewide and said forcing Texas to shut down again "will always be the last option."

The number of positive cases has been spiking across multiple cities and counties in Texas. A group of experts at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center are forecasting a 20 percent rise in cases in North Texas by early July, as a growing number of young people contract the virus.

"The recent growth appears to be primarily due to increased cases in younger age groups, especially those aged 21-40," the experts said in the analysis shared Monday. "In June, 50 percent of hospitalized COVID-19 patients and 30 percent of ICU patients have been under 50 years old."

I live in Harris County. As of today, masks are required in businesses. Can't fine the individual--which probably makes Hidalgo happy, to be honest--but the businesses can be fined $1000 per violation.

Hidalgo wouldn't be able to enforce a fine on people. First off, Abbott nixed the idea. Second, she'd run into a legal buzz saw. She wouldn't want to fine some classes of people. Meaning there'd be a strong ethnic/class and even age skew to those she would fine. However, those are the groups that usually suffer the least from the virus.

Houston's one of the hotspots driving the TX caseload/hospitalizations. It's the other cities like Dallas/FTW, San Antonio, Austin doing most of the rest. With the occasional factory or processing plant.

we don't need birth control and abortion if only people wouldn't have imprudent sex.

we don't need to have restrictions during a pandemic if only people would impose restrictions on themselves.

If only the peasants would follow Big Brother's moral imperatives and do as they say not as they do, the world would be perfect!

I am fed up with my life and the lives of my fellow citizens being considered as expendable while billions for the billionaires are deemed sacred and essential.

How many times have we heard references by Republicans to that? You are not paranoid when somebody keeps telling you that your life is not important, but you may be rather passive to just sit and take it knowing full well that you and yours are being deliberately put in harms way and that your illness and death are quite alright with the Status Quo.

We are rapidly being marginalized by capitalism, corporations and Neo-Liberalism and none of the consumerism propaganda can cover up the message because we are facing the likelihood that we won't be around to do it.

The economy has been and is in contraction here. Our multi-national corporations are focused on other emerging markets, so it makes sense that we are no longer what we imagined we were. The mask is off. If we don't change this at all, then their market mentality will continue to render a large swath of Americans as a nuisance, obsolete or vulture pickings on our way down into abject poverty and social decay.

I wouldn't assume the messages are just joking.

Local leaders warn Texas is heading down a dangerous path as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations surge in big cities

When Gov. Greg Abbott let businesses start reopening, he pointed to two metrics as encouraging signs: the hospitalization rate and the infection rate. Both of those metrics are on the rise in Texas.
