Seven states report highest coronavirus hospitalizations since pandemic began

Source: Washington Post

Seven states are reporting new highs for current coronavirus hospitalizations, according to data tracked by The Washington Post — Arizona, Arkansas, California, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas — as the number of infections continues to climb across the South and West.

More than 800 covid-19 deaths were reported in the United States on Tuesday, the first time fatalities have increased since June 7.

Texas and California on Tuesday eclipsed 5,000 new cases of the novel coronavirus over a 24-hour span — records in those states. Arizona, Nevada and Missouri also logged new single-day highs. Overall, 33 states and U.S. territories now have a rolling average of new cases that is higher than last week.

Hospitalization and deaths are lagging indicators. The surge was just taking off two weeks ago. Bad news.

People are stuck in the cycle of denial -> anger -> bargaining, then back to denial. I guess it will take several cycles before they get to the depression -> acceptance parts. Too bad so many people will die because we have no federal leadership. Well, we do have federal leadership, but it's actively working against the country's citizens' best interests.

Anyway, I was checking worldometers today. I look most days. But I don’t see the numbers of hospitalizations listed. Seems like that would be a good stat to have. Are the numbers of hospitalizations per state compiled anywhere? As stated these are lagging figures but would be interesting to watch.

is compiling hospitalization information from various sources. Be sure to read the note right above the list of results by state.

Edit: it appears that they don't have a source for current/daily hospital utilization/current occupancy for Florida; those fields are marked NA

in its COVID-19 battle

The state has reported an increase in cases and hospitalizations are up. Coronavirus-related deaths so far appear stable.

I do Doordash for a living currently and I'm blown away by the lack of masks even after most cities have mandated them. While most fast food or chain establishments have signs on their door saying don't come in without a mask, sit down restaurants seem to be a different story. There is a trendy well-known restaurant called Culinary Dropout and it is the type of restaurant where there's a bar and there's also shuffleboard and other Millennial driven activities to take part in before you eat or after. I picked up a delivery from there the first night that Maricopa County mandated masks and while all the staff members were all wearing masks there had to be at least 100 people in the restaurant and I scanned around and I did not see one person with a mask on. Now of course if you're actually eating you don't have to have your mask on but everyone wasn't eating simultaneously as you can imagine. People standing in groups of four or five playing games and not one had a mask on.

The only place that I have come across that has really taken it as serious as I believe it should is a chain pizza place called Peter Piper Pizza and when you walk in the door they make you put hand sanitizer on and they take your temperature digitally. And then as I left the girl that was doing that came out and clean the outside door handles off!

The convenience stores like Circle K and QT I haven't seen any signs on those doors yet saying you have to have a mask to come in.

There is a very well-known upscale restaurant called Steak 44 which also happens to be Governor Doug ducey's favorite place to eat. This morning our local ABC affiliate was reporting that at least one employee had tested positive and had anonymous statements by other employees that there was probably more. Governor Ducey and his entourage which usually was ten or more people would come in and none would ever wear masks.

If you know the Phoenix area you know that Sun City is where the retirees are and is where Sheriff Arpaio's best numbers came from. When numbers come in on Election night the numbers coming out of Sun City will be the first ones to watch imo. Because if the elderly are really abandoning Drumpf we will see it here most and it will foretell how good things go for Biden and Mark Kelly.

We went out for father's day. Took masks. But between drinking before dinner, appetizers, dessert, main course the masks were difficult to wrangle. With the volume in the place, the assist from seeing people's mouths while speaking was important. Never underestimate McGurk. It's why the ASL interpreters are unmasked.

However, staff were masked, and nobody outside of a group that entered together was within 6 feet of anybody else in any other group, so there's that. Given how people were arranged, the people closest to 6 feet away were facing away, and the people facing me that were closest were probably 10-12 feet away.

A few sneezers could create problems, to be sure.

Watch the age distribution of those infected. It was biased towards the elderly, at least as far as testing goes. Bias might have flipped.
