LIVE UPDATES: Flag resolution clears Senate, paves the way for state flag to change
Source: Clarion-Ledger
The Mississippi Senate passed a resolution that would allow lawmakers to change the state flag.
Lawmakers voted 36-14 meaning the resolution surpassed the necessary two-thirds majority. This clearly paves the way for the flag to come down in Mississippi.
Lawmakers in both the House and Senate are now expected to pass a bill that removes the current flag and establishes a path forward to getting new one. Gov. Tate Reeves has already said he would sign whatever flag bill the Legislature decides on.

(16,845 posts)People here are sick to death of hearing about it and a lot of people are ambivalent about it. I say that if a flag is that repulsive to such a large number of citizens, it needs to be changed. Other states don't have all this animosity about state flags and we shouldn't either. Maybe now we'll be able to focus on more pressing issues.

I hope we do not squander this moment, and push for substantive change on a grand scale.

(6,474 posts)and its an interesting story because it was designed by the granddaughter of arch-segregationist John Stennis-but its a complete break from the past and I think its beautiful-one of the better state flags I've seen. BTW the granddaughter has asked that it not be referred to as "the Stennis Flag" as its often been called since named after her. She refers to it as the Hospitality Flag and has been adopted de facto by many looking for change like universities in Mississippi. In some ways I think it is great symbolism that the new flag has been designed by a granddaughter of a segregationist-the hope that new generations will rise above a legacy of hate. The new flag MUST have no connect to the old flag

(21,132 posts)It's like they thought, "I guess it's time to do away with a 160 symbol of racism and treason from our flag. But, we must make the new one stupidly and unnecessarily controversial, too!"
