California breaks record -- again -- for most coronavirus cases in a day, exceeding 8,000
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
California counties recorded 8,086 new cases as of late Monday with all but a few counties reporting daily totals, according to data compiled by The Chronicle. Some counties reported higher-than-normal tallies after not updating their case data over the weekend.
The states previous single-day high was 6,449 new cases reached last Tuesday, as California has seen its infection numbers shoot up in recent days due in part to easing of restrictions, social gatherings and outbreaks at a number of prisons, according to officials.
The nine Bay Area counties were reporting 618 new cases on Monday - including nearly 200 at San Quentin State Prison, where an outbreak has swelled to more than 1,000 active cases among inmates. California has reported 223,598 total cases and the Bay Area24,493.
In Los Angeles County, officials announced 2,903 new virus cases Monday, the countys largest one-day increase to date pushing its total past 100,000 cases. The county reported 1,710 hospitalized patients, an increase of several hundred from recent weeks.

(9,054 posts)In the last seven days we've seen a 45% increase in the total number of cases that have tested positive in the state of California," he said. "We don't like the trend line and that's why this mandatory mask requirement is in effect and why we're using this dimmer switch to start to pull back."
Those trends are why Newsom ordered several counties - Los Angeles, Fresno, San Joaquin, Kings, Kern, Imperial and Tulare - to close bars amid surging COVID-19 cases. He recommended eight other counties, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Sacramento, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Stanislaus, also close down bars.
Newsom said that concerning coronavirus statistics land those counties on its watch list. Once a county is on a watch list for 14 days, the state will order certain sectors - like bars - to close. If a county is on the list for three to 14 days, the state will recommend, but not require, such closures.
He announced four more counties have been added to the watch list: Solano, Orange, Merced and Glenn counties. See the full list here.

He has ordered all bars, breweries, brew pubs, pubs, wineries and tasting rooms to close. On Edit: In L.A. County but I'm not sure about the rest of the watchlist counties.
All L.A. County beaches are closed for the 4th of July.

(51,567 posts)Right now he is warning people not to have ANY family gatherings. Also, he is going to enforce his orders with $$$ from the state. If certain counties won't enforce it than they will not get funds from the state. Good! He caved into pressure from $$$ groups and opened too early. I posted a DU Poll and 90% agreed that he opened back up too soon.

Gov. Greg Abbotts new executive order related to Texas response to contain the spread of the coronavirus eliminates Austins and Travis Countys ability to enforce local requirements for people to wear masks.
During a briefing on his new order, which will allow many businesses across Texas reopen their doors on a limited basis, Abbott said his order supersedes any local orders that impose fines for people found violating face mask mandates.
Abbotts order does recommend people wear face masks in public, but said no local government could issue a civil or criminal penalty to anyone not wearing a mask. Orders issued on April 13 by Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt and Mayor Steve Adler had provisions including $1,000 fines for violations of face mask requirements.
At the time, the two officials said they only would ask law enforcement to start issuing fines if they did not see widespread compliance.

(12,640 posts)Our City and County supervisors are aggressively on top of the COVID situation, and as a result, residents are fairly safe to move about fairly normally with masks and social distancing. It helps that we are a military region, and used to discipline.
We still are anxiously awaiting the time bomb that is the annual Zonie invasion...

(9,637 posts)These idiots are going to have a Fourth of July party.
We have a picnic ground area, and they somehow think that they can social distance and be safe.
Get a glass of wine or a beer in any of them, and they will forget all about their masks and social distancing.

Yes, it's going up, but this is a spike that can be managed with targeted closures and mandating of masks.
Would not be surprised to see the latter.
