Report: 2 fallen Marines with York ties identified as potential victims of Russian bounties
Source: York Daily Record
U.S. officials are investigating whether an attack that killed three Marines in Afghanistan in 2019, including York County native Benjamin Hines, was related to Russian bounties, according to a Delaware Online report.
Sgt. Hines was killed alongside Staff Sgt. Christopher Slutman and Cpl. Robert Hendriks in April 2019 when a car rigged with explosives was detonated by their vehicles as they returned to the military base Bagram Airfield. They were infantrymen assigned to 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines, a reserve infantry unit headquartered out of Garden City, New York
According to the report, investigators are now looking into whether the attack was connected to bounties Russia was secretly offering the Taliban for American deaths. Top White House officials were aware in early 2019 of classified intelligence about the bounties, a full year earlier than has been previously reported, according to U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the intelligence.

(45,806 posts)in Afghanistan and it was determined that Russia paid a bounty for him. I had lots of ideas, but none of them were legally doable. My son IS IN Afghanistan now so it's not so far fetched a thought.

(1,002 posts)I'm an army brat - my Dad was a career officer who did two tours of duty in Vietnam. I was terrified for him every day that he was gone. My feelings about the bounty can be best described as tears and rage. How dare Trump do nothing about this? He claims he didn't know - wasn't briefed - this is just BS. He "didn't hear" the white supremacist chant on the video he re-tweeted; he takes "no responsibility" when he was questioned about his lack of action last April as the coronavirus began to kill more and more Americans, etc., etc. He is the most soulless, amoral public figure in recent history.
I have been beside myself every since I first heard about this.

(13,040 posts)I said to my husband that could have been our son (a Marine) had he not finished his 5-year enlistment in 2018. I can only imagine how painful this must be for the families who've lost their child deployed overseas.

(36,053 posts)Notice below the chart labeled " U.S. fatalities by month in only Afghanistan," how the description shows that none of the 22 deaths of 2019 were publicized.
