Gov. Gretchen Whitmer closes Michigan indoor bar service, except for Up North
Source: Detroit Free Press
LANSING Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday ordered bars in south and central Michigan to halt indoor service, saying the step was needed to control an increase in the spread of the coronavirus.
The change takes effect at 11 p.m. Wednesday and applies to licensed establishments that earn more than 70% of their gross receipts from alcohol sales. That means most restaurants that serve alcohol can still do so indoors, provided the patrons are seated at tables that are socially distanced, at least six feet apart, according to the order.
Only in the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula can indoor service continue in bars, under the governor's order.
The governor also signed a package of bills allowing cocktails-to-go at bars and restaurants, which she said would help these businesses serve more Michiganders during this time.

All it took was one packed bar. An infected patron. And a wild party afterward.
This is the toxic combination that has led to a new wave of COVID-19 cases in the Grosse Pointe community, where at least 30 new cases in recent days have been tied to an outbreak at a popular East Lansing bar almost 100 miles away.
Harper's Restaurant & Brew Pub saw shoulder-to-shoulder crowds after reopening earlier this month, including some college students from the affluent Grosse Pointes who unknowingly got infected and brought the virus back home. According to multiple families that are now in quarantine, one of those students who visited Harper's came into contact with a friend who held a huge house party in Grosse Pointe Woods, where dozens of friends partied without masks and social distancing, they said.

As of late Friday, the number of COVID-19 cases linked to Harper's brew pub had increased to 76, according to Ingham County health officials.

I wonder if Whitmer's going to extend this order to affect that type of business, too.

(9,998 posts)Here in the suburbs of Chicago mask usage in pretty high, though many wear them incorrectly exposing their noses. I hear in Northern Lower Michigan it is about 50% mask usage? The Township sent out a letter a few months ago to seasonal owners to self quarantine after arrival for 14 days if you plan on using your place.
I plan to bring most supplies with me and wear my mask when the plumber is around. Am hoping we do not need a new well. First visit to the family cottage since last October as we have been settled in place since mid March.

The bars in the high-risk areas can open if they accept the liability of medical treatment for their patrons that catch the virus.
No social distancing required.
No masks required.
No waivers required.
