WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Monday that U.S. schools must open in the fall - a decision over which he has limited power - as governors struggle with a nationwide rise in coronavirus infections and states reverse and pause attempts to reopen.

Schools are largely under the jurisdiction of state and local governments. Educators have struggled with decisions over opening schools considering the risk of infection to both students and faculty.

"SCHOOLS MUST OPEN IN THE FALL!!!" Trump wrote in a Twitter post.

It was not immediately clear what schools Trump was referring to - elementary and high schools or colleges and universities - or what actions Trump was considering.

"He must be there" can be an inference as to desirability or a command. The forms are homophonous.

Since Trump can't make it a demand, we have two choices. We assume he's using an inapplicable modality and is a fascist or he's using a modality that works and he's emoting.

Schools. In particular, re-opening schools in the fall. That would be pre-school through college. It's July, and there's NO national plan or strategy in the works to make sure that the schools can re-open safely.

What you will hear is that, "Hey, kids don't contract the virus. They should be okay.", but here's the problem. Kids don't teach themselves. They are taught by adults, and adults can get the virus. If a school has an outbreak, then the teachers won't come in nor should they.

Also, what contigencies are being made to ensure safety? Will masks be required? Good luck getting a 6 year old to wear a mask all day. Will there be hand sanitizers in all of the schools? Even the poor ones?

I know. Well, it's up to the governors of each state. Yeah? Governors like Abbott and DeSantis? A parent is supposed to trust these assholes? Are you serious?

If there's chaos with the schools in the fall, Trump and the Republcans won't have time to recover. No one is going to care about fucking statues or fireworks over Mt. Rushmore if they don't have a plan for their kids in the fall.

Parents will blame Trump and the Republicans for this failure, and parents vote. Trump and the Republicans will be cooked.

28. Look at the damage college students have caused, and school is not even in session

I live in a college town (major university). Cases here have spiked. When not in bars, the students staying over are having the typical yard parties in evenings. There have been some bars close, on their own accord, as the owners have recognized what a disaster is brewing.

At least most college students are symptomatic. Children are the most common asymptomatic carriers.

Agree with you fully. If anything, they should be prepping people for the fact that colleges/high school will be online, with resources dedicated to K-9 with greatly reduced time at school.
