Houston mayor cancels in-person GOP convention
Source: By Cassandra Pollock, The Texas Tribune
HOUSTON, Texas -- Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on Wednesday that the city has canceled its contract with the GOP convention, which was scheduled at the George R. Brown Convention Center on July 16. Turner said the contract cancellation will mean that the convention cannot be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center or any other facility in Houston, but may continue virtually. During a virtual City Council meeting Wednesday, Turner said he asked the city's legal department to work with the Houston First Corporation, which operates the George R. Brown Convention Center, to review the contract with the state party. "Where there are provisions that would allow us to cancel this convention - we will exercise those provisions," Turner said. "And the plan is to exercise those provisions to cancel this agreement, this contract, today - to not go forward with this convention." The news comes days after Mayor Turner threatened to cancel the convention if it violated COVID-19 rules. Read more: https://abc13.com/politics/houston-mayor-cancels-in-person-gop-convention/6307042/

26. Can't confirm but
I heard they are now planning on having it about 25 miles north in Conroe, Montgomery County.
This is fine because Montgomery County is a red county. Harris County is blue. Go up there and infection a bunch of GOPers. I was most concerned about people coming to Houston and infecting the workers at the convention center and the restaurant and hotel workers here in Houston. Let them infect each other up there. |

27. Trouble is--there is no counterbalance
They will let the live Republicans vote, but measures to prevent Democrats from voting are still in place.

7. Well.........
I really don't know what to say to your question. I would like Texas to vote blue as much as anyone but........ people, even despicable people like our chump in chiefs base and enablers deserve to live. Even if not them, what about the people who would come in contact with them both in the city and when they return home. I think people over politics myself. Yes, the rwnjs will have fits over this I'm sure but it was the right thing to do and I applaud Houstons mayor for this.

6. Sounds like some TX second-in-commands...
said “Hey, the bosses are too scared to show up, why do we gotta take the fall?”
“Let’s call the mayor and see if we can get this called off!” “Good idea, Joe Bob! Hey everyone, call the mayor and bitch about this! Let’s get it shut down!” |

12. Smart move by Mayor Turner.
Very little political down side to doing away with a meeting like this, in the midst of a plague.

They don't need any more covid patients resulting from the convention.
