RIO DE JANEIRO/BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has gone all in on hydroxychloroquine to help his coronavirus-ravaged country beat COVID-19. He has pushed his government to make the malaria drug widely available and encouraged Brazilians to take it, both to prevent the disease and to treat it.
Now the far-right populist is putting his convictions to the ultimate test: Bolsonaro on Tuesday announced that he had tested positive for the disease and was taking hydroxychloroquine.
Bolsonaro said in a televised interview that he had taken an initial two doses, in conjunction with the antibiotic azithromycin, and felt better almost immediately. His only regret, he said, was not using it sooner.
If I had taken hydroxychloroquine preventively, I would still be working instead of heading into quarantine, Bolsonaro said.
Later, in a separate video, he gulped down a third pill. He said he was aware of other treatments, but noted none of them had been proven to work.
I trust in hydroxychloroquine, he said. And you?
Bolsonaros illness is a potent symbol of his governments botched response to the outbreak. More than 1.7 million people in Brazil have tested positive for coronavirus and nearly 68,000 have died. Only the United States has performed worse. ..................................

(15,220 posts)Thats my take, too.
and I've got a pro tip for him, anything that requires a miracle isn't going to work.
The reason they were discarded here was due to the association with long q-t syndrome, something that occurs with both choloquine drugs and azithromycin. The combination was particularly lethal.
I give it 50-50 odds that he either hasn't tested positive or he has and he's a true believer with a whopping case of placebo effect. The problem with the latter is that it isn't going to last through the second week of this illness, when microclots are going to hit a heart that is already compromised by the drugs he's insisting on taking.
His best hope in that case is that it really is a placebo effect and that he's been given sugar pills by doctors who can presumably read about the real drugs and their lethality in Covid patients.
In any case, this disease has a weird course in a lot of people, a few days of feeling wretched followed by a day of feeling like you've beaten it and then wham! back it comes. My case of presumptive was like that, the fever spiking and breaking for a full two weeks, the cough lasting for six.
