Supreme Court says Manhattan prosecutor may see Trump's personal financial records

Source: Washington Post

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a New York prosecutor is entitled to see President Trump's private and business financial records, ending an intense legal battle waged by the president to keep them secret.

The court said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. had the authority to subpoena the records from Trump's private accounting firm. Trump had claimed an immunity from criminal investigations while in office.

The court will rule later Thursday on subpoenas issues by congressional committees for a broader range of Trump's financial records.

Seeing Trump's financial records is a BIG win. They're much more detailed than his tax records.

Guess Democrats won't see Trump's records. For now.

The release is to the state AG is for use in a grand jury. They won’t appear in public until and unless Trump goes to trial in NY state.

I am assuming that the members of the grand jury will not include anyone who has had a close family member die from the Covid-19 because we wouldn't want anyone to leak the documents.

My understanding is the grand jury has already been seated and is awaiting the documents. I could be wrong... but that’s my belief. Given it’s a New York State grand Jury the chances of a relative having covid are highly likely. 😉

Congress' oversight. I figured as long as the court was staying strictly constitutional, this was really not a surprising decision, as shown by the 7-2 ruling.

Looks to me like SCROTUS punted on both Trump tax decisions; sent them back to lower courts with a list of arguments Trump can try again.

Surely, a state prosecutor can respond to a request without violating any laws, correct?

And the House would get them in a timely way that would enable them to begin new impeachment proceedings.

If I recall correctly, that's core to an impeachment article they'd been working on since last year.

who might be qualified enough to skim past Senate approval. Their last idea, a guy who hadn't prosecuted a jaywalking ticket, didn't fare too well even as an "acting" appointment.

They're going to want to run out the clock. After the election, they'll give up trying to block this because they think it will be irrelevant.

It won't be, win or lose.
