New York City Reaches Milestone With No Reported Virus Deaths

Source: Bloomberg

New York City, once the epicenter of the nation’s coronavirus outbreak, has just reported its first day with zero confirmed or probable virus deaths since the pandemic hit New York State.

The milestone came Sunday in initial data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

It marked the end of a four-month stretch since the city reported its first Covid-19 fatality on March 11. The confirmed daily death count hit its height on April 7 at 597. Another 216 people were reported likely to have died from the virus despite no positive laboratory tests that day.

“New Yorkers have been the hero of this story, going above and beyond to keep each other safe,” City Hall spokeswoman Avery Cohen said in an emailed statement.

I am not seeing too many anti-mask protests from New York City. What is amazing is that even though some Republican areas are starting to look even worse than New York did, we still see a steady stream of anti-mask, pro-Trump protests where folks demand that the emergency be called off.

Yeah, I can be a loud, opinionated New Yorker.

I'm also in general one of most courtesy minded people you'll meet.
When I'm not rushing to an appointment etc something really time sensitive - I love welcoming meeing people who are first time, or on a return visit to NYC. Helping them if they need it, and I can.
Sometimes I even ask about them visiting if I'm nearby a group speaking in another language that look like visitors. A lot of fun!

I had so much fun doing a cross-country, and 2/3rds cross-country in '79, '80, and I met so many good, helpful people- I want to pay it forward.

Waaay later I got to Europe by the grace of family. Met lots of nice, and helpful people! (Pssst... even in Paris, France contrary to some people's experiences! . )

and to all the hospital employees who bore the brunt of this vicious virus. You guys are the best, and your selfless efforts saved so many lives. There cannot be enough said about the effort and empathy from the medical community. We love you, and thank you.

Governor Cuomo has done a fantastic job, even with the Trump administration often hindering his efforts, rather than helping. There was a path that needed to be followed, and Governor Cuomo faithfully followed that path instead of listening to republicans who called him too cautious, his mandates too drastic.

There's still a good percentage of republicans who refuse to comply with mandated mask wearing, but New York prevailed in spite of them. Now is not a time to get cocky and rest on our laurels though. Constant vigilance is the plan going forward. Until there is a cure for the infected, and a vaccine against contracting the virus in the first place, New Yorkers cannot allow themselves to think we've "beaten" the virus. This virus is pernicious, and it's biding it's time, waiting for people to turn their back on it. Hopefully all New Yorkers will resist the temptation to celebrate too much.

Why aren't other cities following their lead? Why didn't other cities and states prepare for the Covid pandemic when they had 2 or 3 months' warning? It boggles my mind that people ignored what was happening in New York in March/April and now it's moving to the southern and midwestern states.

Well done, New York! Don't let up now, this isn't over yet.

... that news!
Thanks from us NYC'rs for your kind words!

Being mindful that any death from this illness will shatter the worlds of that person's circle(s). Hopefully we'll never go back to those horrific numbers ever again! Maybe, hopefully small to modest upticks only, if that.

At 67, I gotta mostly lay low till a good vaccine. Even if I'd been younger I'd still have taken the precautions that I do now! I will get to a nice big park soonish since last early fall. Hopefully going toTrader Joe's (quite out of my nabe) for the first time in 4 months on Weds.

I have friends around the country doing the right things in areas that haven't, so I'm scared for them.
Of course, worried for myself, family and friends here (and close Tri-State), but at least the numbers are down!

Good Luck to us all!

At his briefing on Monday. He didn't have one good word to say about Trump. Blamed the slow Federal response and all of Trump's failures in this pandemic. Best of all, in his presentation he had a picture of Dr. Fauci with the words: "Believe in Science" beneath it. I'm very grateful for Cuomo's leadership in this. Just like he said, it was 111 days of hell . Grateful to my fellow New Yorkers, we came through for each other. We must stay vigilant and do all we can to keep this virus under control. Hope the other states going through this don't suffer because of the stupidity of their Trump loving governors. Sending good thoughts to you. Enjoyed the briefing so much, missed the beginning so going to look for it on YouTube and see if it's there.
