Days after tweeting he was running for president, the rapper Kanye West is reportedly dropping his attempt to get into the 2020 race.

“He’s out," adviser Steve Kramer told New York Magazine's The Intelligencer. Kramer said he had been hired to help West get on ballots by gathering signatures in two key states.

West tweeted on July 4 that he was running for president, apparently in 2020.

"We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States!" he wrote.

When you look at his behavior, it's clear that there is some empty pit that has to be filled. Narcissistic pathology has two dimensions, narcissistic grandiosity and narcissistic vulnerability. Both stem from a pervasive sense of inferiority and a lack of stable self image. The narcissist must battle against the reality of one's self by projecting and enforcing a false self, one that is magical, superior, gifted, all powerful.

Narcissistic vulnerability occurs when the narcissist sees how other people are perceiving them. Storms of affect, rage, meltdowns, and all manner of distraction are used as a coping strategy to assuage the ego and deny reality.

To some extent, Kanye has no control over this process. It is a dynamic that has built up in his psyche, and typically when someone reaches the age Kanye has reached, they can't scale back.

His behavior is narcissistic, and the grandiosity and vulnerability are obvious. He undoubtedly also has manic symptoms and reportedly does have a bipolar diagnosis.

Personality tends to overlay other diagnoses, and the American psychiatric association for a while tried to encourage clinicians to look at the personality dimension by putting it on a different axis.

The new monoaxial schema for diagnosis in the DSM-5 came about because clinicians continued to not look at personality.

I am not claiming that narcissistic pathology is the only thing going on with Kanye.

The idea I'm sure was that Kanye would pronounce that he is the only one black Americans should be voting for. Now black Americans are not going to fall for that, not all of them. But I'm sure Republicans were counting on at least skimming off some sector of black voters that would never vote for Trump, but also were despondant with having to choose between two old white guys. And all the while fed ads about how both are the same, and are not looking out for black Americans, like Kanye would. Targeting voters who would have probably voted Biden as the best choice between the two, but may vote Kanye as a protest vote. So he would be used to skim off just enough to make a difference in some close elections in Southern states.
