Pence says GOP considering moving convention outdoors
Source: The Hill
Vice President Pence said Wednesday that Republican officials are considering moving the party's convention events in Jacksonville, Fla., outdoors next month.
"There's consideration being given to having the convention in an outdoor setting and also putting the kind of measures in place that put the health of all of those participating, our delegates, visitors and anyone else that's present - we'll put the health of everyone participating first," Pence told reporters on a campaign press call Wednesday afternoon.
Plans for the convention have been marred by uncertainty as a result of dramatically rising coronavirus cases in Florida. President Trump, who has pushed for a full-scale convention despite warnings from public health experts, said last week that the GOP would be "flexible" in its planning but offered no specifics on what he meant.
Pence echoed Trump's remarks Wednesday and described the convention as "a work in progress." He said the campaign is continuously consulting with Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry (R) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) as well as other local health officials.

(23,099 posts)If we're lucky it rains later and the day stays cooled down. If it rains before 2pm, we are screwed. It gets so hot and humid the ground actually steams. Imagine being in a huge stadium with no shade in the afternoon with 96 degree weather and 96% humidity - it's brutal. I spent years dealing with this as a Jaguars season ticket holder for 21 years by wearing a ton of sunscreen (put on in advance), slugging water like it's going out of style, bringing a mister, and putting ice in a rag and putting it around my neck. Can you see these formal repugs doing that? Oh yeah, we took frequent breaks to go downstairs where there are nice air conditioned benches. Of course, there are the Club Seats and Sky Boxes that are air conditioned, but then you aren't out on the field and miss a bunch of the excitement.
It is usually nice in the late evening and at night, but then there are the mosquitos and those can be killer too.
These repugs are idiots!

(23,099 posts)They are too stupid to do what's right - see their face mask rejection. They will pay the price with their health if they don't dress appropriately for the heat, wear sunscreen, a protective hat and drink lots of water. So yeah, the hospitals will have an even greater burden dealing with all these asses that don't know how to survive tropical heat.

(23,099 posts)Every year there are people who come here from the North (or No. Europe) and who end up very sick in the hospital from sun poisoning. You HAVE to have on sunscreen, be wearing a hat, drink a ton of water & use every cooling strategy available to survive. If you don't cool down and stay in the blazing sun for hours without protection and/or hydration, and aren't used to it, you will probably get very sick, especially if you are drinking

(23,099 posts)However, the end of August is usually a very busy time for hurricanes and tropical storms. A small tropical storm with winds of 50 mph would definitely put a damper on the convention without hurting the rest of us too much. That's what I am hoping for - well, I actually want it totally cancelled, but barring that - a small storm would be a great present.

(24,329 posts)Like something out of a nightmare, the coal fire under the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania has been raging since 1962 and may burn for another 250 years.
An attempt to clean up the local landfill lit the coal seams under the surface of this small Pennsylvania town. In the years the fire has burned, residents have slowly abandoned their homes fearing not only the fire beneath their feet but sudden sinkholes and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Eminent domain was used to take control over most of the homes in Centralia and the dozen or so remaining residents agreed to give their property over to the government when they pass away. The state government condemned Centralia in 1992.
Adventurous tourists still venture to Centralia looking to walk along the cracked, graffitied road that leads into town.

Ruby, Arizona
Standing as one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the American Southwest, Ruby, Arizona remains as a reminder of the wild west. With a mine founded in the 1870s that produced gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper, Ruby officially became a town when it opened its first post office in 1910.
The mines are now home to an enormous colony of Mexican free-tail bats. The giant cloud of bats can be seen rushing from the mine entrances at sundown during the summer.
