Trump administration, congressional Republicans eye tying school aid to reopening in next funding bill
The debate comes as Congress prepares for next round of coronavirus relief talks.
The White House and Senate Republicans are developing plans to prod schools to reopen by attaching incentives or conditions to tens of billions of dollars of new aid as part of the next coronavirus relief bill, people involved in the talks said Wednesday.
The deliberations come as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) prepares to unveil legislation next week that would serve as the GOPs opening offer for negotiations on what could be Congresss last major coronavirus spending bill before the November elections.
Republican officials familiar with the negotiations said the bill may include somewhere between $50 billion and $100 billion for elementary and secondary schools, with one person familiar with the talks saying the target was about $70 billion.
Negotiators are looking at $20 billion to $30 billion for higher education, GOP officials said. The officials cautioned that the sums were fluid and that no final decisions had been made.

(15,324 posts)or allow any "interpretive" language that would allow this.
I'm getting a little fucking frustrated with "we'll get our Democratic priorities in the NEXT stimulus" BULLSHIT.
It must be IRONCLAD that Mnuchin, Devos and Donnie Dipshit has "NO" leeway to interpret or implement, because if they do, you can be Damned sure they will extort and blackmail schools.
In fact, Dems ought to demand that any expenditure of funds requires the countersignature of the Speaker of the House.
If Donnie Dipshit, Moscow Mitch and "Please Punch my Face" Mnuchin don't agree to that, you tell them to call you when the Dow hits 1,000... and then you don't take their call until it hits 100.

If the schools open, more people are going to die.
That's what's going to happen. More people sick, everything has to close down again, more people die.
There is no other outcome in this 'plan.'

(9,981 posts)The Texas Education Agency had to backtrack after they first said they would withhold funds from schools that did not reopen with full classes every school day. Teachers, school administrators, and parents complained, and the decisions about how and when to reopen are now mostly being left to local decision makers.
Whether the House supports the inclusion of money for schools will depend on the details. If the money is to force schools to open in unsafe conditions, then they will not support it. But if the money as presented as funding to help schools reopen safely without strings attached, I think Democrats would support this. We all know that Republicans will try to make the money conditional on schools returning to full sessions so parents can get back to work and reduce that unemployment number to make Trump look better.
