Nearly One-Third Of Florida Children Tested For COVID-19 Test Positive

Source: The Huffington Post

Nearly one-third of children who have been tested for the coronavirus in Florida have tested positive, according to data from the state’s Department of Health that comes amid ongoing debate and uncertainty over whether schools will reopen this fall.

Of the 54,022 people under the age of 18 who have been tested for COVID-19 in Florida, 16,797 of them, or roughly 31%, have tested positive, data released Friday shows. In comparison, roughly 11% of everyone in the state who has been tested for the virus — roughly 2.8 million people — has tested positive.

Nearly half of the state’s positive cases among children were in the counties of Broward, Dade, Hillsborough and Palm Beach.

Cases throughout the Sunshine State have risen at alarming rates in recent weeks. On Thursday the state set a new one-day coronavirus death record while also reporting nearly 14,000 new cases of COVID-19 ― the second-highest daily total that the state has seen. Its highest total reported last weekend set a national record.

Amid this growth, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has continued to push for schools to reopen this fall, with him on Tuesday telling mayors in south Florida — the state’s hardest-hit area for cases — that doing so is low-risk.

The data rolls in that children can get Covid-19 at a high rate.

Does anyone rationally think those children would not also spread it as well?

Pushing to open the schools in Florida is insanity.

There was a report in today's rag that some of the labs used by the state (state labs? - not sure of that) were not reporting the negative tests and so were greatly skewing the numbers. At the same time they announced they were terminating services with 3 of the 6 labs to speed up processing. Bet these are connected but they aren't being reported as such as of early today. I have to admit, the numbers seemed unreal and double what was being reported last week so I have seriously wondered WTF. Still feel like WTF just with the # of cases and increasing deaths and death trop planned for Aug. 54% infection rate just can't be right or we are in such peril. It has to be wrong, doesn't it?

The article doesn't give that information.

The rate they give is for the sample of the population tested. Constraints on who's tested are different for kids and growns.

It might just be that parents have kids tested when they have clear symptoms above and beyond sniffles or allergies and which are obvious to parents or caregivers--while adults get tested more often because if you're sniffling and at work that might mean automatic quarantine, or just because one's own symptoms in fearful times are always scarier. Then there are the mandatory tests at some workplaces and in some fields.

The data are ambiguous. Might be, might not be.

How can this have happened!?!

Why if F's name does the Trump administration continually push out BS that is so easily and ridiculously shown to be completely wrong - and so fast that even idiots can put the two together and start scratching their heads.

And when it comes to children, everybody is paying attention. Not even Dear Leader is more loved than the children in our lives.

Aim for the foot and shoot! And again!

I know that these red states don't care if people get sick and die but only care about the economy. Don't they see that this will cost them even more $$$, opening and closing schools to quarantine right and left?

For herd immunity, virus actually has to result in long lasting immunity. Covid might not be resulting in long lasting immunity.

turn them into death traps that no one wants to attend, thus clearing the way to convert public education into privatized online charter schools. Heard the head of the national teachers' union state this earlier today on Thom Hartmann's show. Would explain a lot. I guess kids in poor school districts without good online access would just go into the labor pool--the return of child labor.
