Ghoulish Joni Ernst Says She'd Be Happy To Vote On A Supreme Court Nominee In A Lame Duck Session

Republican Sen. Joni Ernst told reporters Friday that even if Donald Trump and the Senate Republicans lose in November, she'd support the lame-duck Senate confirming a lame-duck appointed Supreme Court nominee before Joe Biden came to office in January. You might be asking, "is this a complete turn-around for Ernst from the last Supreme Court nomination in a presidential election year?" You are right to ask that. It is.

&quot If) it is a lame-duck session, I would support going ahead with any hearings that we might have," Ernst said during a taping of the Iowa Press show on Iowa PBS. "And if it comes to an appointment prior to the end of the year, I would be supportive of that." The question has arisen because of the announcement from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg that she is again getting treatment for cancer. This gleeful looking forward from Ernst is even more ghoulish when you consider what she was saying during the 9-month boycott of Merrick Garland, President Obama's failed nominee to replace Antonin Scalia.

In 2016, it was all about letting the voters have their way. "We will see what the people say this fall and our next president, regardless of party, will be making that nomination," Ernst said. "We understand that, in November if people are unhappy with the way that we have been governing in the United States Senate, they would speak out," Ernst said. "But from what we have heard, people are excited about the opportunity to voice their opinion through the ballot box, whether they're Democrats, whether they're Republicans."

And nobody could do anything about it.

If, God Forbid, RBG is no longer a Supreme Court Justice ON THE DAY that Biden is sworn in ... Mitch will do everything to make sure Trump's guy gets in. He'll hold the vote the DAY BEFORE Biden takes office, Dems take charge of the Senate, and he goes home to KY for good. Happily, in fact. He don't give a f*ck.

Only thing that would stop it is GOP defectors if there were some.

She's been through this before. When she was dealing with pancreatic cancer
in 2009 another Kentucky senator (Bunning) was positively gleeful, all but
predicting her imminent death and looking forward to voting in her replacement.

RBG beat the cancer (she's a total badass) and that Kentucky senator is now dead.

She's made of steel; those people are overlooking the portion of her announcement
where she said that her current treatments are working quite well.

Don't worry about her. I have a feeling that she's going to hang around by sheer will
just to spite those evil monsters; she seems very much the type.

Also think of Jimmy Carter, another badass who, at the age of 95(!) has survived cancer,
a fall that required an operation to relieve pressure in his brain, and another fall that
broke his hip.

Some older folks have an inner steel that is stronger than that of people half their age.

I would hope that all Senate Democrats would not just boycott the vote, but to vociferously protest in the well of the Senate, and then walk out en masse.

...or, for that matter, what the Constitution has to say. Presidential terms last four years, not from Inauguration Day through the day Antonin Scalia dies.

And Trump got into the Oval Office on a fluke of the Electoral College (and with an assist from Russia). You can bet the GOP would have had their underpants in a twist if Hillary Clinton had won the electoral college but not the popular vote. And we'd have heard about it incessantly.

In any event, it's obscene that Iowans brought in Ernst after Tom Harkin's retirement (another reminder that Democratic voters had better ensure turnout for midterms, not just presidential years). Let's send her packing come November and January.

Mc Connel did away with it for lower level appointments but it is still a possibility for supreme court justice nominations.

If that is correct, then Schumer et al can just fillibuster to stop it from happening. Repubs would not muster 60, even senators like Manchin would refuse to vote for a Trump Nominee in a situation like that.
