Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) on Friday called for the resignation of acting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Chad Wolf after federal authorities deployed tear gas on protesters in Portland, Ore., the same night.
Escobar blasted Wolf on Twitter, replying to an interview she shared of Wolf on Fox News, accusing him of "extraordinary vanity and arrogance."
"It's one thing to 'protect' federal buildings, quite another to for @DHSgov to behave like a secret police force in the shocking way we have seen on video. "Acting" @DHS_Wolf needs to resign," Escobar posted Friday.
Escobar's response follows reports of federal law enforcement clad in nonspecific military fatigues using unmarked vehicles to detain protesters in Portland. The demonstrations have been ongoing across Portland's downtown center since the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd at the end of May.

Kudos to Rep. Escobar for standing tall for America! Our Democratic party must push and protect our nation with every ounce of its being.

(15,696 posts)Pelosi, Blumenauer Issue Joint Statement on Trump Administration Actions in Portland
JULY 18, 2020 PRESS RELEASE
Washington, D.C. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative Earl Blumenauer of Portland, Oregon issued this statement regarding the Trump Administrations violent tactics used against protestors in Portland, Oregon:
As our nation mourns the loss of our colleague and beloved civil rights leader John Lewis, we are again reminded of the immense power of peaceful protest in the fight against racial injustice and police brutality. Yet time and time again, the Trump Administration shows its lack of respect for the dignity and First Amendment rights of all Americans.
Last month, the Administration tear-gassed peaceful protestors in Washington, D.C. Now, videos show them kidnapping protestors in unmarked cars in Portland all with the goal of inflaming tensions for their own gain. While Portland is the Presidents current target, any city could be next.
We live in a democracy, not a banana republic. We will not tolerate the use of Oregonians, Washingtonians or any other Americans as props in President Trumps political games. The House is committed to moving swiftly to curb these egregious abuses of power immediately.
