Ohio governor warns state 'could become Florida'

Source: The Hill

Gov. Mike DeWine (R) warned on Sunday that Ohio “could become Florida” as COVID-19 cases surged to new highs in the state.

The governor told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that his state is at a “crucial stage” as Ohio is “headed in the wrong direction” toward Florida’s status as a U.S. epicenter of the pandemic.

“We are at the point where we could become Florida, you know,” DeWine said. “Where you look at our numbers today versus where Florida was a month ago, we have very similar numbers. So we're very, very concerned.”

“While we did a great job early on in Ohio, we're now headed in the wrong direction, and frankly, I'm very, very concerned about that,” he added. “So we're going to move ahead with more orders from us this week.”

His decision to stop high school and college sports started the ball rolling for what became the NCAA cancelling the tournament. After that the NBA shut down as did everything else. DeWine pulled the trigger that really lead to everything shutting down.

Not saying it wouldn’t have anyway. When he canceled the “First Four” in Daytona everything followed very quickly

That Dewine did a surprisingly good job in the face of a lot of criticism. He did cave to the nutjob hardcore right as time went on. When he refused to mandate masks a month or two ago and started opening up the state before we met the guidelines is when he started caving big time. I was so disappointed that he didn’t stand up to them like he had been doing.

The statehouse & state GOP already had him in a vise(holding up gun bills afyer the Dayton massacres in Aug 19).

After the AstroTurf protests at Dr Actons house, the state GOP, and Householder and Obhoff from the statehouse took out and off body parts.

He tried using the mid March shut down to backdoor in abortion restrictions.

I sort of liked him for a week, then I remembered he is a well dressed, jovial hard right wing republican.

If he'd kept a mask restriction in place for the state, and moved the reopening phases out a few weeks, we'd still be riding out the plateau we'd reached. It wasn't optimal, but it was a hell of a lot better than where I'm afraid we're going.

Maybe Dewine will finally find his spine and tell the puke legislators that are at his throat to duck off!!! And the redneck yahoos that are seemingly everywhere in this ridiculous state-they can duck right off too!! Ol Mike needs to mandate masks and require virtual learning for schools for the next few months.

Keeps saying he is laying out his case the way a prosecuting attorney would in a court case. Slowly, so slowly.

There are ppl dead because of his whimpy behaviors

There are people dead because of him and more on the way if he doesn’t step back up to the plate. He can’t depend on the Ohiotucky yahoos to find “their better angels” as he said during that evening presser this week. He’s laying out his case and threatening more measures if things don’t change. They’ll change when he finally stops caving to the nutjobs.

He needs to grow a pair. I'm scared to death for my grandkids. I see kids in the park every day together in packs so I can't see the social distance in school either. This is a very red area so I don't think masks, social distance etc. Will be enforced.

cases can be up to two weeks or shorter incubation time, I suspect that this moment in the sun for Ohio has already been reached, eh?

I love this "I'm very, very, concerned about that" statement of his, it seems he's been listening to Susan Collins, the representative from Maine?

MTP actually had on rational people and experts. Maybe Chuck Toad is finally getting the message. I half expected to have a "powerhouse round table" with Hugh Hewitt! You know, Trump is a genius and it is all a liberal hoax. But it seemed serious today. Finally.

were effective at reducing hospital admissions, but as business re-opened, it was inevitable that the novel corona virus would return.

Here in PA, Gov Wolf shut down the state early and we had almost 6 weeks of continuous cases decline, but as soon as things opened up, even as slowly as they did, cases started to increase. I don't think there is really much anyone can do about it either.

One month ago, Ohio was at 3.6.
3.6 to 6.2 in a month, or nearly a 72% increase.
