Federal judge's son killed, husband shot by unknown gunman at their N.J. home

The son of a federal judge was killed and her husband was wounded when a gunman opened fire at their home in Middlesex County Sunday evening, setting off a massive investigation, officials said.

Mark Anderl, 63, a criminal defense attorney and husband of U.S. District Judge Esther Salas, and their son, Daniel, 20, were shot at about 5 p.m. at their home in North Brunswick. Salas was not injured in the shooting.


The gunman may have been dressed as a FedEx deliveryman, two law enforcement sources told NJ Advance Media.

Chief U.S. District Court Judge Freda Wolfson confirmed to The Associated Press that the couple’s son was killed and Mark Anderl had been wounded in the shooting.

Judge Salas, who is based in Newark, was the first Hispanic female to be appointed to the U.S. District Court in New Jersey.

Salas, 51, has handled cases involving members of the Grape Street Crips, in connection with a long-running drug-trafficking network that was taken down by the FBI in 2015. She was also the judge who sent Real Housewives stars Joe and Teresa Giudice to prison.

The investigation is being led by the FBI. The New Jersey State Police, North Brunswick Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office are also involved. Officials say the suspect remains at large.

The FBI released a statement Sunday night saying, "The FBI is investigating a shooting that occurred at the home of Judge Esther Salas in North Brunswick Township, New Jersey earlier this evening, July 19. We are looking for one subject and ask that anyone who thinks they may have relevant information please call FBI Newark at 973-792-3001. We are working closely with our state and local partners and will provide additional updates when available."

Judge Salas has received threats in the past, sources say.

Authorities are investigating whether there is any connection between those prior threats and the shooting or whether it involved the husband's work as a criminal defense attorney.

Judge Salas was home at the time of the shooting, but was in another area of the house and was not injured.

May the Judge and her family find peace with this tragedy and we hope for a speedy recovery for her husband. He is in stable condition at the hospital after undergoing surgery.

The judge in question is Esther Salas. Earlier in the week, she was assigned to oversee a lawsuit brought by investors against Deutsche Bank over its involvement in the handling of financial matters related to sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein.
