EU reaches 'historic' deal on post-pandemic recovery after marathon summit

JULY 21, 2020 / 1:27 AM / UPDATED 15 MINUTES AGO

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union leaders reached an “historic” deal on a massive stimulus plan for their coronavirus-hit economies at a pre-dawn meeting on Tuesday after a fractious summit that lasted almost five days.

Summit chairman Charles Michel tweeted “Deal” shortly after the 27 leaders finally reached agreement at a 5.15 a.m. (0315 GMT) plenary session.

“This agreement sends a concrete signal that Europe is a force for action,” Michel said at a dawn news conference

“It is about a lot more than money. It is about workers and families, their jobs, their health and their well-being. I believe this agreement will be seen as a pivotal moment in Europe’s journey, but it will also launch us into the future.”

7. Britain will probably cooperate. They have no choice. No trade deal with U.S, as if that matters.

Canada would love a deal with them, I’m sure. I definitely would. I’m Canadian and collaborating with the E.U. and trading with them sounds like the way out of this hellscape in the Americas.

Asia can be a part of this too. In fact, the faster we can diversify the Canadian economy, the better but be a little more careful with China. They are devious.

The United States needless to say is off limits. Not only does it have a raging pandemic but it also cannot be trusted with trade and international agreements. We learned that valuable lesson early when Trump placed emergency tariffs on us and used security reasons for it. As if Canada were planning to attack the United States at any second. After everything, we were looked at as an enemy.

The United States had a surplus with Canada in the beginning so there was no reason for any of this. Their main problems were from China and Mexico?? (although I must admit not knowing too much about what was going on at the U.S. southern border).

The new deal is a sham and there has been no guarantee for tariffs. Indeed, Trump has still been using tariffs on Canada even though we supposedly have a done trade deal.

So, there’s no appetite In the general public to deal anymore with the United States.
