U.S. House passes $740 billion defense bill; fight with Trump looms

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act, a $740 billion bill setting policy for the Pentagon that President Donald Trump has threatened to veto over a provision removing Confederate names from military bases.

The Democratic-led House backed the measure by 295 to 125, paving the way for negotiations with the Republican-led Senate on a compromise version of the NDAA, which Trump would then sign or veto.

Earlier Tuesday, the White House issued an official announcement that Trump would veto the bill if it required the Defense Department to strip the names of Confederate generals from U.S. military bases.

"Section 2829 is part of a sustained effort to erase from the history of the Nation those who do not meet an ever-shifting standard of conduct," the White House said in a statement deploring a "left-wing cultural revolution."

I hope he vetoes the bill over this, the group of people willing to support tRump in this matter is getting smaller and smaller.

Even descendants or Robert E. Lee are now calling for removal of confederate statues etc.

I don’t think the majority of Senate republicans are willing to take his side in this fight.

they lack the backbone to override a veto by their Master, Donald Trump. They can't be independent of him even though primary season is over.

Ridiculous amount of money and captain bronzer will veto because of confederate names being removed. A 1000 dying a day right now, but centuries dead southerners get top attention.

I hope we can soon strip him and the rest of this trash administration from history.

9. But we lose so much history ....

For example, Benedict Arnold's last command as an American general was an artillery emplacement on a cliff overlooking the Hudson river. It was critical to stop the British navy from sailing up the river to attack Albany. This has been mostly lost to history....

So we need to rename West Point as Fort Benedict Arnold.
