Judge orders release of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen by Friday

A federal judge on Thursday ordered the release from prison of President Donald Trump’s former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen by Friday afternoon.

The judge found that Cohen was sent back to prison on July 10 in retaliation for failing to agree a day earlier to not to publish a book about Trump as one of multiple conditions for serving the remainder of his three-year prison term on home confinement.

Cohen had been furloughed from prison in late May due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

Cohen, 53, pleaded guilty in 2018 to multiple financial crimes, as well as to lying to Congess about an aborted bid to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. He also pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations related to faciliating hush money payments to two women, porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal, who say they had sex with Trump.

There was a lot of posting of him out dining with speculation that it violated his home release, but in fact it was not a violation of his terms. He was only sent back because he resisted the sudden unexpected new demand that for home release he must cease activity on the book and his related social media posting.

News reports said he registered as Democrat for 2018 election

also really hard to approve the use of the judicial system to muzzle and quash political opposition (and journalism). Kind of the definition of banana republic -- and one of the reasons the cries of "lock her up" were so chilling to thoughtful observers.
