WASHINGTON (AP) Nearly half of Americans whose families experienced a layoff during the coronavirus pandemic now believe those jobs are lost forever, a new poll shows, as temporary cutbacks give way to shuttered businesses, bankruptcies and lasting payroll cuts.
Its a sharp change after initial optimism the jobs would return. In April, 78% of those in households with a job loss thought theyd be temporary. Now, 47% think that lost job is definitely or probably not coming back, according to the latest poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
That translates into roughly 10 million workers who will need to find a new employer, if not a new occupation.
The poll is the latest sign the solid hiring of May and June, as some states lifted stay-at-home orders and the economy began to recover, may wane as the year goes on. Adding to the challenge: many students will begin the school-year online, making it harder for parents to take jobs outside their homes.

(43,127 posts)There are past clues to shocks to the economic system. Civil War era. Black Death, which was also tied to the Hundred Years' War. Collapse is measurable, even if statistics weren't kept at the time there are plenty of contemporary diaries of smart people (because only really smart people thought to commit it to paper).
A Distant Mirror - historian Barbara Tuchmanns' book on the bubonic plague. Towns disappeared. Abandoned. Roving gangs of flagellates seeking penance. Are MAGAt's going there?

Dystopia is here, wherever you find yourself today, mark the occasion and realize it may not be 'better' by any metric for a very long time.

(15,220 posts)What the hell did people expect? We have an idiot in charge who has bankrupted everything he has touched. Why did anyone expect the country to be better off than any of the Trump businesses?
This pandemic, this economy, this fear, this rage, this sadness belongs to Donald Trump and I, and most of my generation and beyond, will never live long enough to see recovery. I blame anyone who voted for this monster for the state of things, but mostly, I blame the Republican enablers.
Before he got selected by Putin I thought those bankruptcies showed us what his reign of terror would be like. And its even worst than I thought!

(47,397 posts)of all this are staggering and meanwhile, the pandemic is getting worse. So many lives are going to be altered irreversibly and the economy will not recover for a long time. For each business lost, hundreds, even thousands of people are effected and whole communities can be devastated. We could be looking at another Great Depression. What a difference competent leadership would have made.

(47,397 posts)but it does appear to be heading that way. So much damage cannot be undone. So many good, solid businesses will be closed forever. Not only will that affect the owners and their employees, but it will affect other businesses and their employees in the community. In essence, there will be a domino effect throughout the country.
Over the years, so many small businesses have been decimated by large corporations and now the inept response to this pandemic will cost us many more. A lot of people will lose their homes and smaller farms will cease to exist.
Society exists with a delicate balance and any major catastrophe can bring everything down. And that's not even beginning to address how what happens in the United States affects the rest of the world. One vain stupid man can destroy pretty much everything that took years to create and maintain. Like so many brainless people, he doesn't realize that all that he takes for granted takes conscientious, expert maintenance by the many people that he dismisses and ridicules. He is like a two year old playing with matches with no real concept of the consequences.
A handful of very wealthy people and large corporations will thrive and all those dystopian novels and movies will become reality.
Wow, I guess that really was pessimistic! Honestly, I do believe there is hope, but we have to be realistic about our expectations and of course, vote.

(19,038 posts)I keep hearing from people, "when the jobs come back." Well the ones that came back already did for the most part. What we have now is the new normal, sure some jobs will come back, but layoffs are also not done by a long shot.
Local hotels in my small city's downtown laid off 600 workers this week. My company is laying off 200 out of 1200 engineers next Tuesday. Our layoffs are permanent. Those workers will be totally screwed without enhanced unemployment. I've already been told my job is safe, but I have thought a lot about how difficult it would be if I were to be laid off, there are no jobs out there and if 200 of our engineers in addition to the 100 from a couple months ago are in the job market in my city it basically means the competition is incredibly stiff.
The $600 should be extended through the end of the year. I suspect a compromise will look more like $300-350 though. I live in MI, the max unemployment the state pays is $362 a week before taxes, that's a catastrophic amount for most families. It goes back to that and the damage to people's lives and the economy will be devastating.

(41,124 posts)never for many people. Too many businesses have closed and online functions and automation have accelerated recently.
Knowing that homeless, unsheltered people will likely pick up the virus and spread it is even more bad news for the GOP and all.
Here's a new post about how the GOP has agreed to the previous amount of relief ($600) but with inclusion of cuts to Social Security and Medicare, highly unpopular with the masses. It's backed by several Democrats, but commenters note that the majority of Dems will never approve it.
If the GOP keeps the original amount per month but cuts programs, or, goes back to an intended much reduced amount it's bad for Americans and bad for Republicans, especially with the upcoming election, if it's held.
It seems this would give Dems more leverage; retain the original amount, but no program cuts. I don't see how people could survive on less than $500. We'll find out this week since the bill is set to expire Friday, July 31.
The damage is extensive as you say, and what more of a nightmare this could turn into.
