Sources - Marlins cancel game as coronavirus spreads

Source: ESPN

The Miami Marlins' home opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night has been canceled, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan, as coronavirus cases continue to pop up among the team.

Eight more players and two coaches with the Marlins have tested positive for coronavirus, as an outbreak has spread throughout their clubhouse and brought the total of cases in recent days to at least 14, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.

The Marlins remain in Philadelphia and continue to undergo testing after their weekend series there.

On Sunday, four Marlins players tested positive for the coronavirus, including that day's starter, Jose Urena, according to sources familiar with the situation, leading the team to delay its postgame trip home amid concerns about a possible outbreak.

1. Apparently, they are quarantined in Philadelphia.

They started the season on the road.

I love baseball but, damn, I wish they would shut it back down.

7. I thought they were going to do "bubbles"

Of course, those bubbles were AZ and FL, sooooooo......

I guess they ditched that idea in June and here we are.

16. NHL and NBA did.

IMO, baseball could have too. Break the league into 4 divisions and bubble them.

8. OFFS

When I heard early in the series that one of the Marlins players tested positive, I was like, WTF? So now what??? But they played the next game and then the next game.

So now you have 14 players on the Marlins test positive and they just played 3 games here in Philly against the Phillies. So what happens now with the Phillies??????????????????? As it is, the cases have been slowly increasing here in the city due to the dumbasses running to shore house parties and bars in Jersey (because our bars in PA are CLOSED for indoor patrons unless food is served and only at a 25% capacity, and restaurants and bars COMPLETELY CLOSED for indoor patronage but outdoors is available in the city - they never did open for indoors for our "modified green" phase).

Same damn thing happened with the '76ers when this whole thing started back in March when they had just finished a game with the Pistons and it was found that a player on the Jazz tested positive and the Pistons had just played the Jazz before coming here to play the '76ers.

And the irony is that baseball is a naturally "socially distanced" game - but the disaster can happen in the dugout and if players are allowed to go "out" somewhere.

12. Yes, Baseball is as close as it comes to a naturally "socially distanced" team sport. Dugouts. why?

Yes, dugouts are traditional. And they are "cozy", which is why they should not be used. With no spectators in the stadium the players could sit in the stands directly behind the dugouts, with the necessary social distancing but still gathered close enough for the manager to speak to all of them. The ground crews could put up awnings if they wanted shade and the semblance of an enclosure.

Resuming MLB games was an experiment, but not an unreasonable one to attempt. I assume the players who are participating are not in high risk groups, but if they can't adjust their behavior in light of the pandemic this experiment is doomed. They could use the locker room in shifts to avoid close contact, they can charter extra buses and flights during travel to cut down on cowding and risk. If they can't make Baseball work, no team sports should go on during this pandemic.

15. From what they have been talking about locally here

the locker rooms were apparently worse. The Yankees had already started coming here and apparently brought in away-team staff to replace the Philly away-team staff who might have been exposed -

/snip

The Yankees were scheduled to open a two-game series Monday night, with the teams moving to New York for games Wednesday and Thursday. The Phillies fumigated the visiting clubhouse after the Marlins left, according to a source, and the Yankees reportedly brought a clubhouse staff from New York to replace Phillies staff members who are in quarantine.

MLB has its scheduled call with all 30 owners today at about 12:30 pm Eastern. That suddenly is a different call than it would have been 48 hours ago.

Of course the CT is flying about why a certain "throwing out of the first pitch" at a Yankees game next month was "cancelled".

11. Phils - Yankees game just cancelled.

Have been texting one of my retired former coworkers who listens to our local Philly sports talk radio station and she said the Yankees were up next to play the Phillies here and they just cancelled.

14. Just wait until the NFL starts back up.

40 players, 10-20 staff per sideline, all the officials. It's going to be Corona central.
