Police: 'Umbrella Man' was a white supremacist trying to incite George Floyd rioting
Source: StarTribune
Police say the suspect has been identified, but no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.
A masked man who was seen in a viral video smashing the windows of a south Minneapolis auto parts store during the George Floyd protests, earning him the moniker Umbrella Man, is suspected to be a member of the Hells Angels biker gang seeking to incite racial tension in a demonstration that until then had been peaceful, police said.
A Minneapolis police arson investigator said the mans actions at the AutoZone on East Lake Street set off a chain reaction that led to days of looting and rioting. The building was later burned to the ground.
This was the first fire that set off a string of fires and looting throughout the precinct and the rest of the city, Erika Christensen wrote in a search warrant affidavit filed in court this week. Until the actions of the person your affiant has been calling Umbrella man, the protests had been relatively peaceful. The actions of this person created an atmosphere of hostility and tension. Your affiant believes that this individuals sole aim was to incite violence.
Police identified the suspect thanks to a tip that came via email last week, Christensen said.

Why the delay on charges?
We can only assume...
Mainstream media needs to pick up on this one.
The riots were NOT the protestors, it was thugs like this!

It was clear as day that he started it.
And, whats with the black umbrellas?
They seem to be everywhere at the protests and most of them up near the frontlines.

(28,117 posts)Remember these articles from back in June?
Did we see this exposed on the nightly news broadcasts?
*A white supremacist channel on Telegram encouraged its followers to spark violence to start a race war in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd, Politico reported, citing an internal Department of Homeland Security memo.
*Citing the FBI, the note said that two days after Floyd's death, the channel "incited followers to engage in violence and start the 'boogaloo' a term used by some violent extremists to refer to the start of a second Civil War by shooting in a crowd."
*One of the messages in the channel called for potential shooters to "frame the crowd around you" for the violence, the note said, according to Politico.
*Other media outlets have also reported on white supremacist groups weaponizing protests against police brutality to incite violence.
*Meanwhile, several Republican officials, including President Donald Trump, have blamed "antifa" for the violence and some have suggested protesters should be hunted down like terrorists.

I don't remember broadcast media covering much of this but they covered the WH racist blaming "antifa."

So the assholes were operating from end of May thru end of June. Bet they are still at it. The prison gang has been at it for quite awhile, most active in Kentucky and Minnesota. There is a prison in Stillwater.

(5,857 posts)the identity. The only way we know the guy's name is because it was on a search warrant application for cell phone records (which I assume they will use to corroborate other evidence). According to the NY Times it wasn't until they contacted him that he realized he was under investigation -- which is a likely screw up by the police.
They probably want him for the maximum sentence which is 20 years + 10 years for a terrorism enhancement.

Police in Minneapolis say a man known as "Umbrella Man", seen damaging property in the city during the Black Lives Matter protests, has links to white supremacy groups.
People took to the city's streets following the death there in May of George Floyd, an unarmed black man.
Police say Umbrella Man helped turn the largely peaceful protests violent.
Footage of the man wearing a mask and carrying an umbrella while smashing shop windows went viral online.
