Senator, union leader: Postal Service considers downsizing

Source: Associated Press

By ANTHONY IZAGUIRRE

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service is considering closing post offices across the country, sparking concerns ahead of an anticipated surge of mail-in ballots in the 2020 elections, U.S. Sen Joe Manchin and a union leader said Wednesday.

Manchin said he has received numerous reports from post offices and colleagues about service cuts or looming closures in West Virginia and elsewhere, prompting him to send a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy asking for an explanation.

The possible cutbacks come as DeJoy, a major donor to President Donald Trump who took control of the agency last month, moves to eliminate overtime for hundreds of thousands of postal workers, potentially causing a delay in mail deliveries. A recent document from the Postal Service, obtained by The Associated Press, described the need for an “operational pivot” to make the cash-strapped agency financially stable.

“It’s just asinine to think that you can shut something down or throttle it back in terms of the pandemic when basically the lifeline for voting and democracy is going to be in the hands of the Postal Service,” Manchin, a Democrat, told reporters Wednesday.

Like Rebl2 said, Obama should have fixed this during his first 2 years when Democrats controlled Congress.

These days the WV post office will bring packages to my house if they won't fit in my roadside mailbox. I had to call to let them know this was my preference.

17. They will reduce the # of post offices,
Wed Jul 29, 2020, 11:57 PM

which will automatically slow down the delivery of mail-in ballots,

then they will do everything they can to CAUSE delays for the post offices left open,

then they will pass legislation that REQUIRES that mail-in ballots MUST be post marked one day before the election. All post marked ballots THE DAY OF the election and after, will not be counted.

Post offices will then have such a backlog of ballots they will not be able to get them post marked by the required date, although they were submitted to the post office BEFORE the day of the election.

A further possibility of interference could be if the envelope the ballot is mailed in requires the voters name and signature on the outside, one dedicated turdette working in each post office can quickly run through the names, compare to a list of registered voters and their party, and toss the democrats... If the names and signatures are required on the ballot envelope INSIDE the mail envelope, it could still be done once it is opened.

MEANWHILE, Putin has the electronic vote tallies already coded for the hackers to "make it so"...

Biden has it in the bag...

I still say we should offer HUGE rewards to anyone with verifiable proof of mail-in-ballot manipulations (or for that matter, ANY vote manipulations, electronic or mail-in), with guaranteed jail terms for the offenders, it could help.

For a large enough amount most people will report offenders, and EVERYONE hates the idea of going to jail.

Just a thought.

I have voted by mail--with no problems--for decades. But today I was thinking that when I get my ballot and it's done, I will take it to one of the drop off points myself. Just to be double sure that there is no funny stuff about things getting lost, or too damaged to deliver, late postmarks etc. Normally I'd mail it as usual, but this year I'm not taking any chances. I'm in Calif, so really it should be safe, but still....taking no chances. A friend has said she's doing the same, so maybe the idea will spread.

Older gop voters are getting very confused and rightly so. Their idiot king says voting by mail isn’t safe, yet they are afraid of becoming ill if they vote in person. This could work in our favor.

to eliminate Saturday home delivery, or deliver 4 days a week.

In the Great Recession my local PO was not vacuumed often, and floors never waxed. Lobby was cold in winter, warm in summer. Now the lobby is spotless, the floors waxed, carpet runners cleaned, lobby comfortable with air conditioning. This maintenance is done with outside contractors, so they are spending. Can't say if it's imprudence, or an attempt to further stress them financially. I'm sure these are not local decisions, it's from high up the chain of command.
