Fauci Says Eye Protection Might Be Recommended to Fight Virus
Source: Bloomberg
Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. expert on infectious disease, tells ABC News that eye protection may be recommended as part of effort to prevent spread of Covid-19.
If you have goggles or a face shield you should use it to protect as many mucosal surfaces as possible, Fauci says in interview carried on Instagram
Its not universally recommended, but if you really want to be complete, you should probably use it if you can, Fauci says

(51,590 posts)I got some goggles in case we have a shortage in the future, like there are with N95 masks. I got them to fit over my glasses and they only cost $10 (including shipping) from a place that supplies schools with goggles for Science classes. I figured that if I ever flew on a plane I would use them but now I would not do that. Now I won't fly without a full hazmat suit. I read today that a lot of others are having the same idea for flying and they have been selling a lot of them lately.
If I were still teaching I wouldn't go back into a school building without wearing one.

(23,099 posts)When I had cataract surgery I got these anti-glare sunglasses made like safety glasses. They aren't dark, just very anti-glare. I use these for walking at 7am or driving on cloudy days and I can also wear them into the grocery store. I have my really dark polarized sunglasses for driving & when it's bright outside. Living in FL, you have to protect your eyes, even without CV.
Having read Dr. Fauci's suggestion, I will now be wearing my safety goggles when it's dark & rainy & I have to go out.

or like the 6-5 guy in the hardware store wearing a bandana who walks over and leans over to ask if he can help
it's stupid not to take faucci seriously on this. stupid. stupid.

(29,098 posts)There are too many gaps between your glasses and your face to let the vapor that carries the virus in. People don't always approach and speak with you facing towards you. I would imagine in fact that the vapor could get trapped between the frame and your face which seems to me to increase the likelyhood of infection.
I'm not a medical professional...Now just a paranoid Glasses wearer.
Yes...I scare myself all the time....and with the Rona I hate doing it alone.

(29,098 posts)I just was observing that there is alot of gap between glasses and face which would not provide adequate protection from the virus entering the eye as Fauci warned today. I went ahead and bought some shields today to wear over the eyes and my mask. Ugh...Now I just need to convince the spouse to wear shield or goggles with the mask.

(422 posts)Little back story, last summer I was in a coma for 3 weeks, and spent the next 3 months in hospital learning to walk and talk again. Was released just shortly before the 'rona. Looked around at the State of Things, and decided, well heck, it's the "End of the World" might as well cos-play. Turns out I've had a life long affinity for Steampunk. Yes, I dress like a Victorian gentleman nearly everyday. Now, one the 'motifs' of Steampunk is the Plague Doctor (my cloth beak half mask is on its way from Europe as I type) but this latest news affords me the opportunity to upgrade to a full face, goggled Plague doctor mask. Seriously, when am I ever going to get another chance wear one those around again? That's why I kinda don't get the whole anti-mask thing; if ya have a little fun with it, it's really no big deal. Kids love masks, and costumes in general. I think we all might be in a better state if all played a little more and took ourselves so seriously and argued less.
peace,
