Vaccine distribution will be 'joint venture' between CDC and Pentagon

Source: Politico

Nationwide distribution of any coronavirus vaccine will be a “joint venture” between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which typically oversees vaccine allocation, and the Department of Defense, a senior administration official said today.

The Department of Defense “is handling all the logistics of getting the vaccines to the right place, at the right time, in the right condition,” the official said in a call with reporters, adding that CDC will remain in charge of tracking any side effects that emerge post-vaccination and “some of the communications through the state relationships [and] the state public health organizations.”

The plan breaks with the longstanding precedent that CDC distributes vaccines during major outbreaks — such as bad flu seasons — through a centralized ordering system for state and local health officials.

“We believe we’ve actually combined the best of both,” the official said. A second senior administration official stressed the agencies would be working as “one team” to distribute hundreds of millions of doses if any of the vaccines in development are approved in the coming months.

We don't have a vaccine yet and will not for sometime now.

Covid-19 vaccine may not be available until mid-2021, German minister says

A coronavirus vaccine may not be available until the middle of next year, Germany’s minister for research Anja Karliczek warned Wednesday, as she announced further government funding to help accelerate the research and development process.

“Researchers are working at an unbelievable speed, but of course setbacks are always possible,” Karliczek said.

“We can’t expect miracles and most expect that vaccines for the vast majority of the population will only be available in the middle of next year, at the earliest,” she added.

Karliczek, speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, said the German government would offer financial support to three labs currently developing coronavirus vaccines.

I am assuming, the vaccine won’t be ready until next year, and trump’s admin will be gone.

EVERY friggin airline has idle planes. You don't need the friggin dod to ship glass viles between PA and CA.

The only reason to put dod in charge is to keep it away from the public at large. Commercial carriers are more than capable.

This stinks of corruption.

It wouldn't surprise me if there comes a point where the CDC wants the DoD to deliver five million doses of vaccine to New York, three million to Chicago, two million to San Fransisco and so on in a very short window of time. I don't doubt the DoD's ability to do so.

do you think commercial carriers couldn't move thousands of truckloads of perishable goods accross the country efficiently?

We aren't a third world country, the highways aren't closed, there aren't any natural disasters.

This isn't a case where c130's are needed to rush supplies into a hurricane zone.

As a contingency sure. But this says the dod decides where the vaccine goes - not the cdc. This isn't an attack of a major power. It's moving cartons around. In peacetime. Without a national state of emergency.

Few organizations on the planet, short of FedEx and UPS, do logistics better than the US military. FedEx and UPS are far more cost effective. But if money isn't an issue, and the job is super big, DoD is the logical choice. .

From what I see on other websites, about 90% of republicans will be refusing to take it. So let's just distribute it to Democrats and get on with it. Should solve a lot of problems other than the virus in the process.
