Coronavirus updates: Arrests after illicit party boat with 170 guests cruises around New York City

Source: ABC News

The owners and captain of The Liberty Belle, a large riverboat that can fit up to 600 guests with four bars and three outdoor decks, have been arrested after flouting the rules and hosting a party on Saturday with more than 170 guests on board.

Ronny Vargas and Alex Suazo, the boat's owners, were arrested on Saturday night and accused of violating a number of state law provisions.

"Deputy Sheriffs intercept the Liberty Belle at Pier 36 & arrest owners and captain for illegal party: violation of social distancing provisions of the Mayor's and Governor's Emergency Orders, Alcohol Beverage Control Law: unlicensed bar & bottle club & Navigation Law," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The Sheriff's Office also said that the captain of the boat, who was not identified, was issued a summons for not displaying its identification number.

Hopefully those who hired the boat and organized the violations will also be subject to arrest.

Once it was sold, it chugged on up to NY and belonged to this group (who I suppose sold/leased it to the 2 mentioned in the OP article) - http://captainjpcruise.com/liberty-belle/

The booze cruises in NYC generally stay in the East River, between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Hudson is a major commercial waterway; East River is all jetskis and tourist boats.

Although it's obviously not like one of the big ocean liners it apparently steamed on down the Delaware river to near where it empties into the Delaware Bay and I expect it cut across the MD/DE peninsula's "Chesapeake & Delaware Canal" (which I didn't even know existed but it obviously makes sense that it does exist ) to get to Baltimore. As long as it hugged the coast, it should be fine. It was apparently built in 1997, so it's not like it's a "vintage" wooden river paddle boat (and I read its max speed was something like 9 mph). It's also possible that a tug dragged it too.

I am amazed how people can just ignore what is taking place and put their lives, as well as everybody they come into contact with, in danger

or brought in for the "protest".

They should all be tested, and if there is a single test positive, all should be forced to isolate for two weeks. And monitored.
