Singer Sarah Brightman Outbids NASA for Space Tourist's Seat

Source: ABC News

What's a rich space tourist to do? If you want to fly in space, seats are harder to find than a flight out of Chicago's O'Hare airport during a blizzard. So your only option is to bump an astronaut from a seat on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft going to the International Space Station.

ABC News has learned that singer Sarah Brightman, of "Phantom of the Opera" fame, will be the next tourist in space, sometime in 2014 or 2015. To get her seat she had to pay the Russian space agency more than the $51 million NASA budgets on average to send its astronauts to the station.

To maintain its presence in orbit when Soyuz seats are limited, NASA had to agree to commit at least one of its astronauts to spend a year in space, instead of the six months they currently stay. Brightman's trip will be announced in Moscow on Oct. 10.

NASA says a year in space has great medical research benefits. Astronauts spending just six months on the space station in the past have suffered from radiation exposure, muscle mass loss, decreased bone density, and vision problems. The research from a year on the space station will help NASA plan for long flights to Mars or an asteroid. It does mean an astronaut will get booted from a flight to adjust for one less seat.

The sad fact is, space flight is not something that is attainable by 99.9% of the population under any circumstances, and it won't be for probably at least a century.

At least there is now some private ventures for spaceflight, and the money she pays will hopefully go to fund the operational costs for her flight, which pays salaries for those involved and helps fund future development.

It would be different if spaceflight were available to all and the 1% were just buying up all the seats. That isn't the case.

has on the vocal chords while singing. Or for that matter, as a drummer, playing a kit at zero g's. The rebound would change dramatically and imagine the sustain one would get. Next time I have a spare 50 + million, I'm packing my kit and and heading to ISS.

In early 2012 Brightman was appointed as the UNESCO artist for peace for the period 2012–2014 for her “commitment to humanitarian and charitable causes, her contribution, throughout her artistic career, to the promotion of cultural dialogue and the exchanges among cultures, and her dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization”.[19]

In 2012 In conjunction with Virgin Galactic, The Brightman STEM Scholarship program (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) was launched. It will help young women in the US pursue STEM education across their four year college careers.[20]

Sarah Brightman (born 14 August 1960) is an English classical crossover soprano, actress, songwriter and dancer. She is famous for possessing a vocal range of over three octaves.[1][2] She has sung in many languages, including English, Spanish, French, Latin, German, Italian, Russian, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.[3]

Brightman began her career as a member of the dance troupe Hot Gossip and released several disco singles as a solo performer. In 1981, she made her West End musical theatre debut in Cats and met composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, whom she married. She went on to star in several Broadway musicals, including The Phantom of the Opera, where she originated the role of Christine Daaé. The Original London Cast Album of the musical was released in CD format in 1987 and sold over 40 million copies worldwide, making it the biggest-selling cast album of all time.[4]

After retiring from the stage and divorcing Lloyd Webber, Brightman resumed her music career with former Enigma producer Frank Peterson, this time as a classical crossover artist. She is often credited as the creator of this genre and remains among the most prominent performers, with worldwide sales of more than 30 million records and 2 million DVDs, establishing herself as the world's best-selling soprano of all time.[5][6][7] Her duet with the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, "Time To Say Goodbye", topped charts all over Europe and became the highest and fastest selling single of all time in Germany, where it stayed at the top of the charts for fourteen consecutive weeks and sold over 3 million copies.[8][9] It subsequently became an international success selling 12 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.[10][11][12][13] She has now collected over 180 gold and platinum sales awards in 38 different countries.[14] In 2010 she was named by Billboard the 5th most influential and top-selling classical artist of the 2000s decade in the US.[15]

Brightman is the first artist to have been invited twice to perform at the Olympic Games, first at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games where she sang "Amigos Para Siempre" with the Spanish tenor Jose Carreras with an estimated global audience of a billion people, and sixteen years later in Beijing, this time with Chinese singer Liu Huan, performing the song "You and Me" to an estimated 4 billion people worldwide.[16] Since 2010, Brightman is Panasonic's global brand ambassador. Together they launched the song "Shall Be Done" at the 2010 Winter Games held in Vancouver, Canada.[17] Brightman is the face of Panasonic's strategic partnership agreement with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre as she stars in their joint campaign, "The World Heritage Special," that was aired on the National Geographic Channel worldwide.[18]

Apart from music, Brightman has begun a film career, making her debut in Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008), a rock opera-musical film directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, and in autumn 2011 and early 2012 Stephen Evans' "First Night", starring opposite Richard E. Grant.[21][22] In addition, she formed her own production company, Instinct Films, where her first film is in pre-production.[23] Brightman is the world's richest female classical performer with a fortune of £30m (about US$49m).[24]

As an Artist, illustrator and photographer, I resent your putting words in my mouth.

My point was that we had a thriving and cutting edge space program and now we are reduced to getting bumped by the Russians for tourists to just get into space.

Both people and stuff.

Yes, the shuttle was cool, and now it's gone and from a nostalgia standpoint that kinda sucks. I get that.

But NASA is on it. SpaceX is on it. We were doing things in the most expensive manner possible, and that just wasn't sustainable. NASA got bumped for one seat on one flight with a foreign national 3rd party launch program? OH NO.

Not like they don't have a contractual schedule with SpaceX for supplies to the space station, in addition to final testing on putting people in the Dragon capsule.

it really really gets my dandruff up and running since we dont have our own space transport up and running anymore . we pay just as much to go with the russians as to have kept the shuttle going . ( too expensive , hell we have 3 wars running . trillians of dollars to the banks and other corperate welfare ) we are the best wealthfare and the worst wealfare state in the world .

200 mph on these is way scarier than any flying anything & way more dangerous, she should give up her seat for the science/knowledge gained by a qualified person taking the trip.

Donate that money to a food bank or SPCA or Amnesty International..........there are Billions of ways to spend this money to save lives.

My 1982 GS1100E only goes 175, if that is fast enuff I'd be glad to take her for a spin. (wheelies in 4th gear from 105 to 125 mph easy).
