Los Angeles teacher flees home after receiving death threats for wearing 'I can't breathe' T-shirt

Source: CNN

By Alexandra Meeks, CNN 6 hrs ago

A Los Angeles high school teacher said she was forced to flee her home after receiving numerous death threats for wearing an "I can't breathe" T-shirt during one of her virtual class sessions.

The teacher at El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills, California, initially received backlash last week from a parent who was upset that race and social justice topics were being discussed in his daughter's English class.

The upset parent allegedly shared the photo of the teacher on one of his social media platforms, resulting in widespread support and hate alike. According to the teacher, hundreds of emailed threats flooded her inbox after Elijah Schaffer, the podcast host of the YouTube show "Slightly Offens*ve," posted a screenshot of the photo to his Twitter account, where he has amassed more than 200,000 followers.

The teacher, who asked not to be named out of concerns for her safety, said she and her teenage daughter left their home after fearing some of the threatening messages she received.

1. Teachers need to be really careful to keep their political views out of their lessons.

While the cruel police murder of a black man in the streets should not be political, it is.

It IS possible to talk about the current events in a neutral tone and allow kids to reach the obvious conclusions on their own. High school students tend to be compassionate, idealistic, and want things to be fair. But if you go in looking like you have an agenda, they will mentally assign you a label as right or left and judge everything you say accordingly. Not to mention you will incur the wrath of the parents and put your job in jeopardy.

And parents have every right to say they don't want their kids 'indoctrinated.' I certainly complained loudly when my son's class was being 'groomed' to be young Republicans!!

3. Agree. First, would the teacher wear a political t-shirt to teach in a classroom?

Online teaching should be conducted with the same decorum as a classroom. Even more so, since the teacher has no idea who is watching over the kids' shoulders. And, anything they wear or say can be recorded for posting on social media.

says we have enough to worry about with Covid, and I agree. While I think it's disgusting the teacher is receiving death threats because of it, she showed pretty poor judgement wearing that in front of her students.

This isn't a political issue as it is a right vs wrong issue for me.

I personally blame Fox and Trump, but then there's Facebook and the dregs of the internet like 4chan.
