Chicago passes 500 homicides, on track for one of the most violent years in decades
SOPHIE SHERRY and JEREMY GORNER Chicago Tribune 1 hr ago
Barely a month into his job as Chicagos top cop, David Brown described his moonshot: a year when there would be fewer than 300 homicides in the city.
When Brown took the podium Monday for his usual news conference on weekend violence, the city had recorded more than 500 homicides this year, putting it on pace with 2016 when Chicago was hit with a spike of violence not seen in decades.
Brown, now more than four months into his tenure, did not mention the grim milestone while talking to reporters. He also did not dwell on the toll from the weekend: at least 10 people killed and 40 others wounded by gun violence that included a mass shooting at a pancake house on the Far Southwest Side. A man died and four others were wounded as diners with children scattered.
In a little more than three hours beginning around 2 a.m. Sunday, Chicago police responded to 10 separate shootings, including three homicides and an attack on two officers who exchanged gunfire with an armed teen. All three were wounded.
Brown said 41 Chicago police officers have been shot at this year and 10 of them have been hit. Asked if cops were being targeted, Brown replied, I think theres more than a suggestion that people are seeking to do harm to cops.

"I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end," he said. "Beginning on January 20th, 2017, safety will be restored."

(36,788 posts)Trump threatened/promised to send in the feds to fix the violence.
They called his bluff - no feds.

(6,477 posts)The Feds offered and accepted by Chicago are mainly ATF and FBI who are working on gang violence, not a bunch of no-badge thugs supposedly guarding a federal courthouse. In any case, the feds that were added are apparently having no discernible effect.

(15,398 posts)It's a very complicated situation that's been going on for decades. If we teach not to kill in school, that won't work either. I'm at a loss.

(6,477 posts)So what would you know about it anyway? Other than what's circulated in the conservative press?

(6,477 posts)I wish conservative shitheads would keep Chicago out of their mouths. It's obvious that they don't give a shit about Chicago or its people, but only care to score cheap political points. Hell, they probably laugh about the deaths. It's so immoral, isn't it, mahatmajeeves? A person would have to be a real piece of shit to engage in that kind of discourse.

(15,398 posts)The vast majority of Chicago gun violence is smuggled in.
greenjar_01
(6,477 posts)Don't be ridiculous.
The question of the illegal guns being smuggled in is separate, though it is certainly true that the guns in the hands of the gangs are mostly circulated through the illicit market. They come from straw purchases and direct sales from Indiana, Iowa, and downstate IL, where legal gun owners pretend their guns were stolen, gun shows black market sales, etc.

(15,398 posts)It's easier to get a stay-at-home license. But yes, the majority are smuggled in.

(15,398 posts)It did after Mayor Jane Byrne pushed through the ban on firearms not already registered with Chicago police in March 1982. The city's ban lasted until 2010, when the Supreme Court struck it down by a majority vote of 5-4. Two years later, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago struck down as unconstitutional the state's ban on carrying concealed firearms. In 2013, the General Assembly passed a law making Illinois the last state to grant its residents the right to concealed carry. Right now, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco have stricter gun laws on the books, experts say.

(15,398 posts)We've talked about gun laws before. He said they were strict, but he likes them that way. I am a little to his right, seeing the very strict laws that I have here in NYC.
