Top Adviser To Operation Warp Speed Calls An October Vaccine 'Extremely Unlikely'

Dr. Moncef Slaoui is one of two men that President Trump has put in charge of Operation Warp Speed, which has a goal of developing a COVID-19 vaccine by January. The former GlaxoSmithKline executive said having states prepared is "the right thing to do" in case a vaccine does become ready, but he acknowledged that having one by October or November was "extremely unlikely."

Slaoui said that he "firmly" believed a vaccine could be ready by the end of the year and that "we may have enough vaccine by the end of the year to immunize probably I would say between 20 [million] and 25 million people." He said immunizing the U.S. population as a whole would take until "the middle of 2021."

"Trying to propose that there is going to be a vaccine available before the election actually may undermine people's trust in the process to develop an efficacious and safe vaccine," Khan said.

Slaoui said he understands why the date might concern people but added that the people working on Operation Warp Speed aren't interested in the politicization of the vaccine. He said vaccines would not be introduced before clinical trials are completed.

.... clinical trials, analyze the data, and watch the people who got the vacccine for its
benefits and or side effects. Let alone to manufacture and distribute the vaccine too.

.... thing is kabuki. They are developing a production and distribution system for a vaccine
that does not even exist and that vaccine will not be real until they do clinical trials on it and
as of now that has happened.

The different vaccines are going to have differing routes of manufacture.
If we say there's 5 candidates, a wise plan would be to have 2 or three sites with existing infrastructure for the technology needed to mass produce each of the 5.
All 10-15 sites will never be used, but 2 to 5 will already be prepped, with process outlines, draft procedures, and first stage operations training in place.
That's what happened with H1N1. I know a biochemist that works for one of the sites that did this, but they never ended up in mass manufacture. But, they were ready, months in advance.

They’re doing trials right now. October is unlikely, but approval by end of the year is not.

Anyway, it’s good to see this guy pushing back on October. He’s a Trump appointee, so it’s at least comforting to hear he’s not going to roll over.

I will bet that before election day, there will be an approved vaccine. Maybe by Spring there will be a safe and effective vaccine.

Two thirds of Americans polled will not trust a "political" vaccine rushed to production for the election. Now if they would just vote.
