I own an ocean going boat, have a coast guard charter captains license, and (except this year) spend more days on the water most years than most people spend doing yardwork.

You just never hear of multiple boats needing assistance unless they run into each other. It's almost always a solitary incident. Usually a hose or fitting gives way and the boat is taking on water.

My guess is too much captain morgan and not enough captain sully. These are texas man incidents for sure.

Boats in trouble are floating on the water, at least temporarily. Planes are thousands of feet in the air and moving fast.

Sure, you can die fast, but if you are prepared (life raft, type 1 pfd's, epirb, etc) your chances are good.

Some would make you wish you did drown. And noit on a lake, 125 miles out in the atlantic on multi-day fishing trips.

But I've never felt unsafe because I and my crew are prepared and experienced.

Boating is not dangerous. People get stupid ad stupid people get hurt. Or, bad luck happens.

You can get badly hurt in a car accident far easier than on a boat.

Just my experience.

An earlier thread had a video of at least 100 boats, probably more, of all sizes sailing within a few yards of each other.

There were bound to be accidents from that throng with skippers of varying degrees of skill and experience all jammed together.

'Many boats in distress,' several have sunk during 'Trump Boat Parade' on Lake Travis, TSCO says (KVUE-TV)

Reports of sinking boats on Lake Travis began coming in on the Citizen app at around 1:20 p.m. Saturday.

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — The Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) has responded to "many boats in distress" during the "Trump Boat Parade" on Lake Travis, a spokesperson with the TSCO confirmed to KVUE. Several boats have sunk.

Reports of sinking boats on Lake Travis began coming in on the Citizen app at around 1:20 p.m. Saturday. TSCO confirmed boats in distress throughout the parade route, including at Paradise Cove, West Beach, Point Venture and Hurst Creek.

Supporters of President Trump had gathered on the lake for a parade Saturday morning and afternoon. According to a Facebook page for the event, more than 2,000 people were planning to attend, with another more than 5,000 “interested.”

The event organizer encouraged "boats of all shapes and sizes" to participate in the parade, which would feature skydivers parachuting from a helicopter "with smoke and flags flying."

21. Lake Travis can be pretty treacherous
Sat Sep 5, 2020, 03:40 PM
Sep 2020
Lake Travis is a reservoir on the Colorado River in central Texas in the United States. The reservoir was formed in 1942 by the construction of Mansfield Dam on the western edge of Austin, Texas by the Lower Colorado River Authority, and was built specifically to contain floodwaters in a flash-flood prone region. During its construction, after a severe flood in July 1938, the height of the dam was raised to add storage capacity for floodwaters. Serving principally as a flood-control reservoir, Lake Travis' historical minimum to maximum water height change is nearly 100 feet. In 2018 alone, it saw a 20-foot depth increase within a single 24-hour period of time. With 30 square miles of surface area, Lake Travis has the largest storage capacity of the seven reservoirs known as the Highland Lakes, and stretches 65 miles upriver from western Travis County in a highly serpentine course into southern Burnet County to Max Starcke Dam, southwest of the town of Marble Falls.

Which appears to be part of the river.

I'm not even sure that area can handle that many boats at once. Red point is where the boats got stuck.

I'm from San Antonio, but have never been up there. But our rivers have eddies and whirlpools along the shore. I think they might have had an inch of rain several days ago. (We got an inch in SA on Thursday)

They were also planning a Trump parade on Canyon Lake to the south. Circled in red.
