Kamala Harris warns interference, voter suppression could cost her and Joe Biden the election

Source: Chicago Tribune

WASHINGTON -- Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris says foreign interference, doubt cast about the election by President Donald Trump and voter suppression could potentially cost her and Joe Biden the White House in November.

"I am a realist about it. Joe is a realist about it," the California senator said during an interview with CNN's "State of the Union" that aired Sunday.

The 2020 election will be held under challenging circumstances.

It will be the first U.S. election in over a century to be conducted during a pandemic, which is expected to lead to a massive surge in mail voting. Trump has repeatedly railed against mail balloting, which he says without offering proof will lead to widespread voter fraud. And for the first time in decades, Republicans will be able to closely scrutinize who casts ballots due to a recent court ruling that wiped out tighter restrictions on poll monitoring.

I am glad Kamala Harris is drawing attention to all of the roadblocks that Republicans are putting to voting, as well as the foreign interference that the Trump administration is trying to hide.

The fact of the matter is that if voter suppression did not have an impact, Republicans would not be trying so hard to disenfranchise American voters by making it so difficult to vote. Likewise, there is a reason why Russia is working overtime to promote conspiracies about voting fraud.

Polls do not win elections. Votes do. It does not matter if Biden/Harris are the favorites if people are prevented from voting.

GOP recruits army of poll watchers to fight voter fraud no one can prove exists

Republicans are recruiting an estimated 50,000 volunteers to act as "poll watchers" in November, part of a multimillion-dollar effort to police who votes and how.

That effort, coordinated by the Republican National Committee and President Donald Trump's re-election campaign, includes a $20 million fund for legal battles as well as the GOP's first national poll-patrol operation in nearly 40 years.

While poll watching is an ordinary part of elections -- both parties do it -- voting rights advocates worry that such a moneyed, large-scale offensive by the Republicans will intimidate and target minority voters who tend to vote Democratic and chill turnout in a pivotal contest already upended by the coronavirus pandemic.

Some states allow poll monitors to challenge a voter's eligibility, requiring that person's ballot undergo additional vetting to be counted. In Michigan, for example, a challenged voter will be removed from line and questioned about their citizenship, age, residency and date of voter registration if, according to election rules, a vote challenger has "good reason" to believe they are not eligible. They are required to take an oath attesting that their answers are true and are given a special ballot.

Trump says he wants to use 'sheriffs' as poll watchers on Election Day

President Donald Trump, who's repeatedly railed against mail-in voting, said Thursday he has concerns about in-person voting as well, and wants to use law-enforcement as poll watchers on Election Day.

In a phone interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News during the Democratic National Convention, Trump was asked if he planned to have poll watchers on Election Day with the "ability to monitor, to avoid fraud and cross check whether or not these are registered voters, whether or not there's been identification to know if it's a real vote from a real American?"

Trump said, "We're going to have everything. We're going to have sheriffs and law enforcement and we're going to have, hopefully, U.S. attorneys, and we're going to have everybody, and attorney generals, but it's very hard."

Marc Elias, a top lawyer for the Democrats on voting rights, tweeted that such a move by Trump would be challenged in court by Democrats.

Certainly, Trump will call for his minions to show up at polls in democratic areas (minority) to intimidate and bottleneck voting. Many will try to bring open carry weapons. Intimidate people into turning the car around and going home.

This caught my eye:

Republicans will be able to closely scrutinize who casts ballots due to a recent court ruling that wiped out tighter restrictions on poll monitoring.

no matter what. Get your ballot and hand carry it to wherever you think is best to be counted.

I'm going in the morning, taking a rollator with me, a bunch of snacks and water. I'll keep my mouth shut, listen to my mp3 player, and patiently wait my turn to step up to the plate. Where I live, it has never been a problem, except in 2018 when they changed the polling place--except I had my ballot with me. They had to take it, then. Takes only a few minutes to vote.

I'm gonna wear all patriotic themes, top to bottom. Haven't decided if I will wear a Vet top or not. I have a flag tee in case I just want that.

In the evening, I'm going to drink Martinelli's (I don't use alcohol,) or eggnog if I can find it, and lay out a bunch of snacks and settle back to watch the returns. I haven't had pizza in a million years; I may plan for that. Vote, buy pizza, relax...

I am going to cry if Trump takes it away, just like I did with Hillary. It would mean the end of my country, continuous strife, and loss of freedom and chaos in the WH.

So, I am going to pretend it is a joyous night, filled with hope and happiness that we have kicked a dictator to the curb. But, at the same time, I am laying in supplies, feeding the animals earlier than usual, and making mental notes of what might happen.

We all gotta stick together. If we don't get rid of Trump et al, we will never be able to have nice things.

VOTE!

but I also have some real issues with it.

We can turn out at the polls in huge numbers, and mail in the votes in huge numbers, but if PUTIN gives us the electronic vote totals, and DEJOY gives us the mail in vote totals by suppression/challenges/intimidation by goons at the polls, and the MEDIA decides when the election is over and WHO won, what WE do is irrelevant.

Putin has had 4 years to hone his talents. They will be able to perform miracles with the vote tallies, and we can't do a damn thing about it.

DeJoy has personally made it almost impossible for the mail in vote to be trusted.

CONGRESS needs to be passing legislation that addresses these issues, takes the offenders to task, lets the offenders know JAIL TIME is going to be the cost for ANYONE that tampers with our democratic process, OR knows about the tampering and doesn't notify the authorities.

I will do my damndest to do what I can. But we are in this situation because NO ONE has been willing to do anything, for decades. THAT is the fault of the party and the party officials.

You can be damned sure that the republican party would be taking measures to address ANYTHING that was in their way. Yet the democrats seem to think that NOTHING CAN BE DONE LEGALLY to stop this real time coup. Yeah, we'll issue irrelevant subpoenas, send sternly worded missives, demand investigations that republican senators will sideline.

We should be making sure our OWN poll watchers will be there, WITH lawyers in tow. ALL ballots within the possession of the post office by election day MUST be postmarked THAT day, even the ballots that have been sitting in a bin for a week, OR a day. Then ALL BALLOTS MUST BE ACCEPTED AND COUNTED. There is no magic deadline that MUST be adhered to. The constitution may set the dates, but for extenuating circumstances WE can change the dates.

If a signature is challenged, GET THE VOTER IN TO ATTEST TO THE VALIDITY OF THE SIGNATURE. It is not rocket science. If a voter is challenged at the poll, get the lawyer involved and resolve the issue.

Geezus Fucking Christ!!!

If we get to a situation where the election results won't be accepted, what the fuck are we going to do? Just let him STAY?

If WE win, I don't give a damn what the turd will or won't do. HE WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE WHITE HOUSE. I will gladly lend my hand.

But if WE win, yet allow him and his ilk to steal it AGAIN, the party that ALLOWS it to happen deserves to go on the junk pile of political experiments.

All WE can do is vote. The party apparatus and the party politicians must do their part.

/rant off

8. Facebook says Russian influence campaign targeted left-wing voters in U.S., UK
Sun Sep 6, 2020, 11:09 PM

Agree. Russia is not just trying to gin up support for Trump on the right. On the left, you have Russia trying to continue to sow discord on the left. Russia would not be this heavily involved unless they thought there was a good chance that they would be successful with a Trump Presidency who is willing to overlook this interference.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-facebook-russia/facebook-says-russian-influence-campaign-targeted-left-wing-voters-in-u-s-uk-idUSKBN25S5UI

Investigators at social media analytics firm Graphika studied the operation and said Peace Data predominately targeted progressive and left-wing groups in the United States and Britain, but also posted about events in other countries including Algeria and Egypt.

It said in a report here that the website pushed messages critical of right-wing voices and the centre left, and in the United States "paid particular attention to racial and political tensions", including civil rights protests and criticism of President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival, Joe Biden.

Graphika said only around 5% of Peace Data’s English-language articles directly concerned the U.S. election, but that “this facet of the operation suggests an attempt to build a left-wing audience and steer it away from Biden’s campaign.”

The findings support an assessment by the United States’ top counterintelligence official last month, who said Moscow was using online disinformation to try to undercut the Biden campaign, and could stoke fears about further Russian efforts to interfere in the November vote.

I like your username, too. In junior high, my home room got a new student, who introduced herself as Peggy Santafe, pronounced exactly the same way as the capital of New Mexico. We all laughed (yours truly included) and made fun of the name, only to find out later that she was telling the truth: that was her real name! And your handle reminded me of that incident. Not the last time I've had egg on my face, sadly.

I wanted a name that would reflect where I live and that included my own name. Peggy is a nickname for Margaret, which is my legal name, and not much used.

I'm sure you're much more thoughtful these days.
