WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump is preparing to again release a list of potential Supreme Court nominees, one that voters can compare to rival Joe Bidens promise to nominate a Black woman to the high court if given the chance.
White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters at the White House on Tuesday that Trumps list will be released soon. Im optimistic that youll see those SCOTUS picks in coming days, Meadows said.
The move to release a list is a repeat of a successful strategy Trump employed during his 2016 campaign. Four years ago he took the unprecedented step of announcing potential Supreme Court nominees in a bid to win over conservatives and evangelicals who were not enthusiastic about his personal flaws but came around to his candidacy because of his promises on judicial appointments.
Trump had previously said on Twitter the announcement of a new list would come by September 1 and that it may include some, or many of those already on the list. Biden too has said hes working on a list of potential nominees, but the campaign has given no indication that it would release any names before the November election and doing so would risk giving Trump and Republicans a target to put Biden on defense. Any vacancy would give the president the ability to shape the future of the powerful court, which is currently divided 5-4 between conservatives and liberals.

The book Never Trump has a chapter on just that; conservative lawyers (Federalist Society) who HATED Trump but looked the other way when they saw his choices, not just for the SCOTUS, but all federal courts. To get THEIR judges they held their noses and accepted a tyrant. Prominent lawyer in that book who admitted he did exactly that - John Yoo.
Proving to me, at least, conservatives only care about taxes and the courts. All else be damned.
But Biden should NOT do the same as it will give the Reich a campaign issue and a diversion from what us in front of everyones eyes.

(1,241 posts)This analysist is of the opinion Trump will make a barter arrangement with the Democrats and Progressives for implementation of previously unacceptable right wing policy. Basically the Democrats trade his right wing policy for the nomination of Loretta Lynch.
He might have just enough leverage to pull off the trading of Ginsberg's seat for a Democratic woman of color if we give him something in return.

(7,392 posts)Because he knows they are pretty much a one issue block - the Supreme Court. Also, the majority on the Supreme Court also belong to Opus Dei, an ultra conservative branch of the Catholic Church that holds that personal religious beliefs trump the law. That is how we end up with decisions such as Hobby Lobby and support for discriminations based deeply held religious beliefs, such as cake bakers being allowed to turn away business if the cake offends their religious views, i.e. refuse to bake a cake for a gay couple. In other words, hate based on such for profit, extreme religion is legal. These decisions, of course, ignore the establishment clause written into the 1st Amendment because these justices are guided by deeply held religious beliefs that are superior to the Constitution.

There are no laws, or rules, governing how many justices may serve on the Supreme Court.
