Trump: 'I was sailing to an easy election' until pandemic hit
Source: The Hill
...
"How are we doing with China? We just have the plague. We've had other plagues sent by them. I wonder if they did it on purpose. What do you think?" Trump said in Winston-Salem, amplifying the unproven idea that China intentionally allowed COVID-19 to spread to the rest of the world.
"Ive got to tell you, I was sailing to an easy election. This was going to be so easy," Trump continued. "I probably wouldve not been here tonight. I wouldve said, No we dont have to bother.' Now we have to work against a guy that doesnt know where he is. I cant believe it."
...
"We were so successful before the plague came in from China that we were starting to get together," he said. "People forget, success brings people together."
"This was an unforeseen event," Trump said of the pandemic. "A terrible event. A horrible event. So many people died. Nobody should have died. Not one person."

(182,990 posts)He and the GOP have been getting killed in the suburbs with women. Some of that is the Dems recruiting and supporting much better candidates. He won on a fluke spurred by the media with the lowest turnout ever (media).

(28,817 posts)isn't it a fact that he's never achieved even a 50% approval in his entire term? he was sailing to disaster from the day he was born.
sometimes i go on his twitter and remind him that just because he's always gotten away with it does not mean he always will. at other times i get a nearly panicky feeling that i am wrong, and he will.
it's just excruciating.

(9,897 posts)Yet his account spews hate, lies and propaganda freely with no opportunity to offer him a rejoinder or not-so-subtle reminder that he is NOT a king and is NOT universally loved (or even tolerated)...they can circle the drain of history for all I care...but, since you maintain an ability to tweak the freak, please do so apace!

i'm not nice when i respond to trump, but of course i don't think he ever sees anything negative. it's mostly more for my own satisfaction.

Dems need to realize this going forward, that the greatest threat to democracy is Big Tech.

(4,723 posts)Hell, you could do something now, instead of being an asshole. I know, I know. You don't have a shred of decency in your character. Cheer up, though. Millions of assholes from coast to coast still love you. How could they but, being fed a constant diet of bullshit from their hateful radio stations and FAUX news propaganda outlet. Luckily for decent people everywhere, not everyone in this country is a sucker. So why not go bite your pillow or something, Donald.

(7,404 posts)Trump was probably the only person blindsided by this. We had a team on the ground in China looking specifically for this very event. And then Trump brought them home weeks before the event broke out. Bringing that team of scientists home is without doubt the largest blunder in modern history. It exposed an unbelievable level of incompetence by Trump.

(14,178 posts)Sorry for yelling, but its exasperating. Putting aside the awful human cost, just looking at it purely politically.
All you had to do was simply be a leader. Instead of calling it a Democratic hoax, you could have said you want to work with Democrats to make sure the US is ready and able with masks, ventilators, tests... Come down on anyone that doubted the pandemic, even if they were in your cult. Be clear about that and use your health experts to guide the country and support their recommendations.
Want proof? Look at the leaders around the world that did show leadership and contained the virus well like New Zealand's PM:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-newzealand-election-ardern/new-zealand-pm-arderns-ratings-sky-high-ahead-of-election-idUSKCN24R0UI
New Zealand PM Ardern's ratings sky high ahead of election
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arderns party raced ahead of rivals in the latest opinion poll, putting the charismatic 40-year-old leader on track for a comfortable victory in the elections in September.
................
Ardern has consistently polled ahead of her rivals and her popularity has risen further this year as she won global praise for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

(15,604 posts)how he reveals who he really is. No President is ever 'sailing along' unless they have mailed it in. It explains his executive time and why he doesn't show up in his office until 10 or 11 in the morning and quits by 4. He's lazy and undisciplined. Everything he had in life was given to him and he leveraged wealth, social position and lawyers into getting what he wanted without really having to work. He's keeps telling us who he is but sadly, some people (like a few members of my family!) don't see it...............

(19,253 posts)Joe was still ahead of him clearly before the pandemic hit, Joe had a 4-5 point lead before the pandemic.
And as has been pointed out, the pandemic should have been a gift to any reasonably competent leader. Just look at the states whose governors provided strong leadership, they're all shoe ins for re-election. MI, MD, VA, NY, WA, and CA all love their governors.
