Senate Dems probe political donations surrounding nomination of Louis DeJoy's wife to be ambassador

Source: Salon

The alignment of high-dollar donations with Trump's pick of Aldona Wos as ambassador was first reported by Salon

Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee are investigating the events surrounding the nomination of Aldona Wos, the wife of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, to be the next U.S. ambassador to Canada following a report on high-dollar donations made by Salon.

Salon first reported the conspicuous alignment of hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations from DeJoy with President Donald Trump's February announcement of Wos as his pick to fill the cush Ottawa gig.

DeJoy, a top Trump donor and the former head fundraiser for the Republican National Convention, made a series of major donations to the Trump campaign and Senate Republicans leading up to his wife's nomination, federal election records show.

In the weeks surrounding the nomination, DeJoy gave Trump Victory $360,600. He also gave a $35,000 maximum donation to the Senate GOP's election committee the day after Trump announced his intention to nominate Wos.

The 2017 minimum pay for ambassadors is $124,406 a year. The maximum is $187,000. The State Department is one of many governmental agencies that have adopted a certified performance appraisal system. This system allows an ambassador's base salary to exceed the established maximum based on merit or value to the mission, but it may not go over the salary set for the Vice President of the United States, which was which was $240,100 a year as of 2017.

got a nice posting as an Ambassador and it won't be the last under either party. I remember Dan Rooney, owner of the Pgh Steelers and a registered republican, came out in support of Obama and was rewarded by being named Ambassador to Ireland.

Are big campaign donations and subsequent govt jobs business as usual under Trump? Yes. Is it unprecedented? No.

He was not "rewarded" anything. He was a highly qualified and dignified candidate and was selected.

Comparing Rooney's selection to DeJoy's is absurd and preposterous.

was a reward for supporting Obama. Being a proud Irishman is not in itself a qualification to be the ambassaor to Ireland. No doubt about it that Dan Rooney was highly respected in Pgh and in the NFL and played a major role, mostly behind the scenes, in running the league. Everyone knew Rooney being posted to Ireland was a dream job for him and he would be an excellent representative of the Obama administration and the US, which he was.

Giving out ambassadorships to political supporters isn't new. Both parties do it. There are plenty of things to be outraged about; this is low on the list imho.

Rooney was intellectually and morally qualified to be an ambassador. Obama selected someone qualified for the job.

Trump did not, and your comparison of Rooney's appointment to DeJoy's is absurd and laughable.
