Top Armed Services Republican 'dismayed' at Trump comments on military leaders
Source: The Hill
The top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee said Wednesday it is wrong for President Trump to question the motivation of U.S. military leaders.
Asked at an event hosted by Defense News on Wednesday whether it was right for Trump to suggest Pentagon officials send troops to war because they are beholden to the defense industry, House Armed Services Committee ranking member Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) said flatly, no.
As a matter of fact, I've been a little dismayed at what's happened in the past few days, continued Thornberry, who is retiring from Congress at the end of this term.
I know the president says things for effect a lot, but to have a commander in chief question the motivations of military leaders and basically say they're in it for themselves is wrong, and it gives our adversaries an opening. Even if you think it, you shouldn't say it.

You fucking coward.
You should be outraged. You should be horrified. And you certainly took a long time to comment.
And, like the coward you are, you only said something because you're retiring.
Did I say this already? You fucking coward. I hope you live the rest of your life shamed and shunned. Though I doubt that will happen.

(27,810 posts)That said, I'm "dismayed" that the military is so in the pocket of the GOP that they consistently land us with these poor leaders, like Reagan, GWB, and Trump. I guess I'm glad if - for once - the wool has been pulled from their eyes, but it should not have come to this. Ever.

Like most committee chairs, Thornberry maintained close connections to the industry he was charged with overseeing. Over the course of his career, Thornberry raked in more than $1.6 million from the defense industry, including hundreds of thousands from top weapons manufacturers like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, and Textron, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Those corporations all have major operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which is home to a booming defense and aerospace manufacturing sector. Textrons subsidiary Bell and the aircraft giant Boeing have operations in Amarillo, which is the heart of Thornberrys district. Last year, the two companies signed a $4.2 billion contract to build dozens of V-22 Ospreys, with most of the work being done in Fort Worth and some in Amarillo. With Thornberry on his way out, proponents of the military industrial complex will have to find a new champion in Texas.
