Trump unveils new list of potential Supreme Court nominees to boost his reelection campaign

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump unveiled a new list of 20 potential Supreme Court nominees Wednesday in an effort to energize the conservative legal movement and help his flagging reelection campaign. ... The list, fashioned after those he put out during his 2016 race for the White House when there was an existing vacancy, is intended to elevate the nation's highest court as an issue in 2020 - and put pressure on Democratic nominee Joe Biden to follow suit. Trump already had listed 25 other potential nominees.

{snip}

Its release - eight days after Trump had suggested it would be unveiled - came as the White House was seeking to counter assertions in Bob Woodward's new book that Trump purposely downplayed the COVID-19 threat for months despite recognizing its deadly potential.

The list of 20 new names is composed of federal appeals and district court judges, U.S. senators and others who Trump might nominate to the high court if given the chance in a second term. They include Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri, as well as at least five current or former members of his administration.

But one name on Trump's earlier list - Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who he placed on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit - is said to be a possible nominee even sooner should ailing Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 87, leave the bench this year.

You know he's watching the numbers very closely. Support is dropping and he's apparently running out of money. This didn't cost him a dime.

They've got closets full of those very things already. They're paid for and ready to hand to Trump the second he leaves office.

Trump releases new list of Supreme Court prospects ahead of 2020 election

The long-expected list represents an attempt by the president to energize conservative and evangelical voters with the promise of more justices like Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump released a new list of Supreme Court prospects on Wednesday, pledging to pick a nominee from it if he had the opportunity to fill another vacancy.

The announcement adds 20 names to those that Trump has already mentioned as potential picks, all of whom he said would be "jurists in the mold of Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito."

The new list includes Republican Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Josh Hawley of Missouri, as well as Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, Paul Clement, a prominent lawyer for conservative causes, and Fourth Circuit Appeals Court Judge Alison Jones Rushing, who was confirmed in 2019 at age 37.

It comes as Trump seeks to energize courts-focused Republican and evangelical voters less than two months before the 2020 election, while polls show him trailing Democratic nominee Joe Biden nationally and in most swing states.

The list was released at Trump's campaign site.

Trump puts out a list to demonstrate to his base he is still on the reservation. He is under no obligation to actually pick anyone on this list. It is strictly for optics.

Trumps unstated purpose is probably to goad Joe Biden to also publishing a list. This would give the right wingers a focal point to attack Biden on policy. Trump is just a horrible person.
