'He knowingly and willingly lied': Biden rips Trump over Woodward book revelations

Source: MSN/Politico

Former Vice President Joe Biden slammed Donald Trump over the revelation that Trump acknowledged how “deadly” the coronavirus could be back in February, accusing the president of “a life-and-death betrayal of the American people” that he contended was “almost criminal.“

“He knew how deadly it was. It was much more deadly than the flu,” Biden said during an event with autoworkers in the swing state of Michigan. “He knew and purposely played it down. Worse, he lied to the American people. He knowingly and willingly lied about the threat it posed to the country for months.”

About an hour before Biden was set to speak, The Washington Post published excerpts of on-the-record conversations between Trump and veteran journalist Bob Woodward in which Trump conceded on Feb. 7 that the virus that had only just begun to spread in the U.S. was deadlier than the flu, and could be transmitted by particles in the air.

“You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed,” Trump told Woodward. “And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flu.”

A large number of his followers actually believe him, and they act upon what he tells them. When he lied to his followers, and they believed him, he endangered us all. He has serious blood on his hands.

Trump actively encouraged people to do stupid shit like not wearing a mask or sabotaging shutdowns early on that could have helped control the spread.

9. Trump on Coronavirus: "Nobody Could Have Predicted Something Like This" (March 30, 2020)

In March 2020, Trump was not only blaming President Obama for not having a test ready for a virus that did not even exist in 2016, but Trump was also claiming nobody could have predicted something like the Coronavirus even though he had been telling Woodard a month earlier that he knew COVID-19 was going to be bad.

TRUMP: And yet, you know, we’ve tested more than any other country. We inherited a broken test --

KILMEADE: Yes.

TRUMP: -- the whole thing was broken. And we rebuilt it and, you know, this -- I wish it was done before and I’m not even blaming anybody. Nobody could have predicted something like this but we’re now testing hundreds of thousands of people. We’ve tested more than anybody in the world by far.

When you look at South Korea, we’ll do more in eight days than they do in eight weeks. And that’s not a knock on them. Plus our test is a better test. It’s a very sophisticated test. And we -- so we’ve tested more and that’s why we have more cases because if you look at some of the countries with one and a half billion people, whether it’s India, China, or others, I mean they have -- they have very big countries but we test more than anybody else so we will show -- we will find people that have it that don’t even know they’re sick in some cases.

So we have more cases than anybody, but we’re doing really well and we also have a very low -- relative to other countries, very low mortality rate. And there are reasons for that.

It seems more timely and relevant.
