Clackamas County deputy placed on leave after video captures him blaming antifa for putting ‘lives at stake’ in wildfires

A Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputy seen in a viral video making what the sheriff’s office is calling “inappropriate statements,” while on duty has been placed on administrative leave, the agency announced Saturday.

The deputy’s remarks seemed to give credence to the idea that anti-fascists were causing havoc and possibly setting fires, unfounded rumors strenuously debunked by law enforcement.

“As soon as I was made aware of this incident, I moved swiftly to place this deputy on leave while we investigate,” Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said in the release. “The Sheriff’s Office mission is to provide calm and safety especially during unprecedented times such as these. I expect nothing less of our deputies, and apologize to all in our community.”

The video, in which deputy Mark Nikolai is aware he was being filmed, has a timestamp indicating it was filmed on Thursday.

“Antifa motherf-----s are out here causing hell,” the deputy says. “There’s a lot of lives at stake and there’s a lot of people’s property at stake because these guys got some vendetta.”

I would be more likely to suspect right wing goons in the coastal communities in the area. First there were drunken Russians harassing a black couple and tourists on the beach in Lincoln City. Then right wing Trump supporters protesting with their assault rifles, alarming tourists staying in the town of Seaside, Ore. A group of business owners complained to authorities in a city council meeting and now some right wing gun nuts from the beach protest are harassing a brew pub owner threatening to visit the pub bringing their guns with them. I can imagine some of them starting fires and trying to blame it on Antifa.

Since we moved to Oregon, I have participated in numerous protests and big marches downtown.

You know who goes to those?

Moms. Dads. Young couples. Groups of friends - of all genders. Grandmas. And some grandpas. Young parents with kids, and babies in "papoose" harnesses. Often with their pet dogs along, on proper leashes and often with some sort of fashion accessory or "coat". Students. Teenagers. Middle-agers and baby boomers. And all colors, mostly white, but there still is some variety.

I've never seen an Antifa anybody, EVER. Anywhere. At ANY such gathering large or small. And EVERY BIT OF IT, EACH ONE, EACH TIME was PEACEFUL. Period. Full stop.

I’ve been worried for awhile about armed right wing-nuts self-deputizing and ‘keeping the peace’. When I read that local LEO’s were showing gratitude to these very people at local protests, I knew things were going in the wrong direction.

There is going to be a lot of blood shed I fear.

Many innocent lives changed and many lost.

On happier news, I got my mountain bike tuned up so I can take a spin to work off some excess anxiety.....Riding my bike makes me feel like a 12 year old kid again.

...
When deputies and troopers form Oregon State Police arrived, they found 41-year-old transient Michael Jarrod Bakkela standing near "a very large fire" that was threatening several homes. Bakkela reportedly denied starting the fire.

The Sheriff's Office says that this case is considered separate from the investigation into the Almeda Fire's origin, but that both have been investigated by the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit (MADIU).

Bakkela was initially taken to the Jackson County Jail on a probation violation for an original charge of methamphetamine possession. He now faces two counts of Arson I, 15 counts of Criminal Mischief I, and 14 counts of Reckless Endangering.
