South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg reported hitting a deer with his car on Saturday night but actually killed a pedestrian whose body was not found until the next day, state investigators said Monday. Ravnsborg's office has said he immediately called 911 after the accident on a rural stretch of U.S. Highway 14 and did not realize he had hit a man until the body was found.

... snip ...

Ravnsborg had been at a fundraising dinner hosted by the Spink County Republicans at Rooster's Bar & Grill. The attorney general is known to be a frequent attendee of the fundraisers known as Lincoln Day Dinners, hosted by county GOP groups across the state.

... snip ...

Ravnsborg has received six traffic tickets for speeding in South Dakota over the last six years. He also received tickets for a seat belt violation and for driving a vehicle without a proper exhaust and muffler system.

KELO reports that most recently, Ravnsborg was cited twice for speeding in 2018 -- once for going 40 mph in a 35 mph zone in Beadle County and once for going 80 mph in a 65 mph zone in Pennington County. The station reports he also paid for two speeding tickets in Iowa in 1996 and 2003.

Nothing adds up about this story. In fact, the news outlet is simply reporting what the AG said—it’s his spin, not theirs.

A DUI and vehicular homicide, perhaps. If covered up by the top law enforcement official in South Dakota, it puts him in line for a plum appointment to the Trump Cult of Liars.

The title's a bit click-baitish but it did quote the local Public Safety spokesman (Mangan) saying this:

Ravnsborg was driving westbound on the highway in a 2011 Ford Taurus, according to the DPS news release on Monday. He called the Hyde County Sheriff's Office to say he hit a deer but law enforcement realized he hit a person when Boever's body was discovered the next morning.

“Most people when they hit a deer they stop and they call law enforcement,” Mangan said. “The majority of people” get out of their car if they suspect their car was damaged, he added.

Mangan said all aspects of the crash are under investigation, including whether it could be a criminal hit-and-run if Ravnsborg actually knew he hit a person.

One to check on the deer and my car. Had to move one deer off the road so no one else would hit it.

I would know if I hit a person. Unless I was drunk or an asshole. Or both.

I hit and killed a deer that came running into the road right in front of me. I saw it but even going slow due to the conditions I couldn't stop in time to spare it.

Even extremely shaken and heart broken that I had killed a beautiful creature I definitely knew what I had hit when I called the NY troopers and hubby.

How would someone sober not know the difference between a human and a deer? And why wouldn't you stop to check both what you hit and your vehicle? "drunk or an asshole. Or both" sounds about right to me.
