Trump Plans to Denounce Focus on Slavery, Racism in Schools
Source: Bloomberg
President Donald Trump plans to denounce school curricula that emphasize the impact of slavery and racism on American history during a roundtable discussion at the National Archives on Thursday.
The president will deliver remarks on his administrations efforts to promote a more balanced, accurate, and patriotic curricula in Americas schools, the White House said in a statement.
That includes criticizing what the White House calls the liberal indoctrination of Americas youth. Trump is expected to explicitly fault the New York Times 1619 Project. The Pulitzer-Prize winning public school curriculum developed by the newspaper orients American history from the date that the first slave ship arrived in what later became the U.S.
Trump has sought to rally his core supporters, who are disproportionately White, ahead of the November election. He trails Democrat Joe Biden in polls, and he has tried to make his demands for law and order amid sometimes violent national protests over racism and police brutality a central issue in the campaign.

(14,558 posts)Yeah, we need to go the complete opposite direction with curriculum, get rid of the concerned 'christian' parents who want to teach creationism, and the Kluxers and Storm Fronters who want to give equal time to Jefferson Davis.
We also need to seriously beef up civics, rhetoric and debate classes, as well as geography and REAL history. Do that, ensure everyone who wants can vote, get rid of the electoral college and we will have our republic back -
Well, Biden has said he wants to build back better. Here's a great opportunity.

(1,242 posts)I was a Senior in high school and the Reagan revolution had taken. I was in 6th grade in 1980-81 and from then all through high school I was never required to learn the preamble, etc. My parents were both required, as well as my aunts and uncles. It is harder for them to dictate social studies standards because so much text comes from online texts. Most of our textbooks were published in Texas.

(11,513 posts)I'm afraid that albatross will hang around our necks forever. Small, right wing states, as we know, have a disproportionate amount of power in choosing a President thanks to the electoral college. They'll never in a million years vote to give that up.
The electoral college gives a 2 to 3 percentage point advantage to GOPers, and we've seen the results of that with Bush and tRump. That's a pretty significant disadvantage for Democrats, and it will keep this country tilted far more to the right than what the majority of people favor.

(14,558 posts)We know we'll never overturn the Amendment that provides for the Electoral College because as you say, the little states will never ratify.
However..........the NPV initiative has been passed by a number of state legislatures. Basically, since each state manages its own elections, this legislation, if passed by a state legislature and signed by that state's governor, requires the 'electors' from the state to vote according to the national popular vote.
If you think it through, the net result is one-person-one-vote. Everybody's vote counts equally, and the Electoral College is permanently circumvented.

Blue State, Red State this time instead of the Blue nd the Gray? This is typical dictator wannabe shit in trying a serious rewriting of ameriKKKan history from the lead racist in america trump.

The right wing has broken more law and disrupted more order than the left wing, and violated more of the United States Constitution! We should be yelling USA! USA! LAW AND ORDER! LAW AND ORDER! LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALLLLL! Emphasize the LLLLL in the word ALL; when I was working in the schools in little right-wing towns, it was disturbing how many of the students seemed to be pledging allegiance to a country with "liberty and justice for US!"

(6,799 posts)I thought, this doesn't sound right.
But now I get it.
Blaming slaves and their descendants for the tragedies of their multi-generational interaction with the progeny of their former owners is exactly in line with the Trump I know. As is pushing a plan for "law and order" in which the only logical way it provides it's promise is by a targeted re-enslaving of people. Man, slave owners are soooo predictable.

(33,244 posts)That's what the 1619 project is meant to address, and it doesn't even touch on the genocide of Native peoples, or discrimination against immigrants. It's not "Liberal Indoctrination", it is FACTS to correct the flag-waving Jingoism of current history education.
It is still possible to be honest about America's past AND still be patriotic, but that would mean letting go of Binary Thinking, and that is never to the GOP's advantage.
