Most In-Person Classes Delayed Again As NYC Switches To Staggered Reopening Of Schools

The school year slated to begin Monday will only start in-person with 3K, Pre-K and special education students, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced.
Students at K-5 and K-8 schools will return on September 29th. Students at middle and high schools, secondary schools and transfer schools will start attending October 1st, de Blasio announced at his press briefing.
Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza said all students will begin remote learning on September 21st, which was the earlier target in-person start date.
The switch comes after weeks of mounting pressure from unions and educators who say many of the citys 1,600 schools are in buildings that were unsafe with antiquated ventilation systems, windowless classrooms, and disorganized distribution of personal protective equipment.
