Study: Maine recovering from pandemic better than any other state
Source: WGME 13
"Moody's Investment Service, a bond rating company, and CNN Business have teamed up to track the economic recovery of each state.
They say right now, Maine's economy is operating at 93 percent of where it was in early March, making it number one in the so-called "Back-to-Normal Index."
They point to the state's low infection rate, as well as the fact that Maine didn't rush to re-open, as factors."

Some of the Republicans in the state wanted to impeach Gov Janet Mills over her handling of the pandemic. This is some evidence that shows she has been making good decisions.
Here's the page for the back to normal index.

(6,496 posts)And of course that ass is threatening to run against Janet Mills again. If he was governor right now, we'd probably have one of the highest rates of covid-19 positivity in the country. Maine has the oldest population in the country, so we have lot of vulnerable people. I hope they remember that Janet Mills took care of them when she is up for re-election. I also wish we could get the Maine constitution amended so we could use ranked choice voting in that race. That is the only race we haven't been able to use it for because of the wording in the Maine constitution and the Republicans absolutely will not change it.

(10,073 posts)Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand and Angela Merkel of Germany have both been praised for their strict policies and better-than-average results. Now the Democratic governor of Maine has shown that following the rules works. Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island has also been a strong leader. She set up a statewide testing program for students and staff so schools could reopen safely. The state has had several days with no new cases or deaths.
I hope the next time Trump mouths off about Democrats running states poorly some reporter has the guts to throw the facts about Maine and Rhode Island in his facealso the fact that the states with the highest number of cases today are Republican states of Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Several Midwestern states are also experiencing big outbreaks.

(2,293 posts)The deciding factor is not gender -- it is the knowledge or humility to listen to scientists rather than loyalty to a single political figure.
Gov Kimmy (Reynolds) of Iowa -- who was elected to Lt Gov without a college degree and olnly completed her degree while having taxpayers pay for it while she should have been working doing whatever that job is -- is a Trump humping science denier. Joni Ernst, our Senator, is a trump humping science denier.
It is about listening to experts -- Cuomo did it in NY. The Republican in Ohio got ahead of it before political pressure led him to go sideways.
If you put country/state/county well being over politics -- whether a man or woman -- you will handle this better.
The truth is most Republicans in power with allegiance to Trump are White and Male so that does skew the stupidly following an idiot toward white males are idiots (look at the Senate Republican photo or today;s toons).

although I think in some ways the women are a little more conscientious because a lot of them are the first woman to hold the office ever. Mills is the first female governor of Maine. They have something to prove still... that woman are equally good leaders. They have to be better to get respect. Seems kind of crappy that is the case, but it is. Hillary Clinton is a prime example of this, of course. She would be president right now if she was a man. She was held to a much higher standard than Trump. But definitely, this has more to do with being a leader that will listen to the medical professions and scientists.

(17 posts)There has been an uptick in the past two weeks. We are now averaging around 20 new cases a day with over 40 today. Gov. Mills did a great job. We are going out to eat tonight in a tent in Blue Hill.
Here is the current travel info:

Relatives from DC entering the state had test results but they were never checked.
Fall temps, and in the mid-coast leaves are just starting to change.

(6,496 posts)But if you aren't from NJ, NY, CT, NH, or VT, you are supposed to either have a recent negative COVID-19 test or self quarantine for two weeks. I know there have been lots of MA people up here though, like always. I think a lot of the visitors have been staying away in general.. going to camps and such... and being pretty good about wearing masks.

(6,496 posts)Acadia National Park attracts visitors from all over the world. I went there for a couple days this summer and the parking was insane because they weren't running the park buses. Also, very long wait to get a table a restaurant in Bar Harbor on week day night. Still, way less visitors this year I think because of the Canadian border closing. Maine is typically brimming with Canadian tourists in the summer, but they weren't allowed to visit this year.

(7,530 posts)I was there once, and got to get right down by the ocean among huge boulders and listen to the sound of the rocks.
Also had one of the best seafood meals there ever, and I'm not a huge lobster fan.

(6,496 posts)scallops (prefer baked with scallops) are my favorite. I think lobster is too much of pain to eat. It's alright taste wise, but not my favorite.

(193 posts)I live in Maine and Governor Mills has been all we could ask for during this pandemic. She has refused to buckle under pressure from these idiots who love tRump and yearn for the "good old days" of that moron LeRage (as I like to call him).
LeRage is back up here from Florida; where he really lives (no income tax!) and making noise about running against her. I can't wait for that because Janet will kick his sorry ass back to Florida for good!
Hat's off to Dr. Shah the head of the Maine CDC as well.

Maine does not have a low infection rate. Maine is on the list of states you have to quarantine from if you travel fro there to MA. It is a high infection rate zone.
They also didn't not rush to re-open. Vacation Land simply became Pandemic Land. Sorry Mainer's, you opened way too quickly - or at least they opened in a way you didn't intend.
Wedding venues, camps, and resort communities are full steam ahead, which is why your economy rebounded.

(6,496 posts)Maine has 1.02% infection rate and .6% positivity rate. MA is on the list of states that are supposed to do the two week quarantine to come to Maine.

MA's own website says that Maine is a low risk state.

(14,837 posts)Your rate of increase is very high, and your population is spread out, so testing isn't consistent. Also, a large portion of your population is transient - they live somewhere else. Their infections are tracing back to maine.
Mass isn't punishing Maine for no good reason. Your stats indicate a risk level that is higher than acceptable for the region, so you people coming from there have to Quarantine. Same for RI.
MA isn't making this up. They are controlling risk.
Vacation Land sends home lots of souvenirs. Accept it.

"COVID in Maine is spreading in a slow and controlled fashion, and Maines COVID preparedness meets international standards."
MA isn't punishing ME. Mainers are not restricted from going to MA.
https://www.mass.gov/info-details/covid-19-travel-order#lower-risk-states-
"Travelers from COVID-19 lower-risk States are not required to fill out the Massachusetts Travel Form and do not need to quarantine. States are included on the list based on meeting two criteria: average daily cases per 100K below 6 AND positive test rate below 5%, both measured as a 7-day rolling average. Data is from covidexitstrategy.org as of September 9, 2020.
The current list of COVID-19 lower-risk states includes:
Colorado
Connecticut
Maine
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
Oregon
Vermont
Washington
Wyoming

(12,029 posts)It says on the MA site that Maine is a low-risk state that doesn't require quarantining. Are you looking on a different official Massachusetts website?
In cases/million population, only Vermont is lower than us.

mainer
(12,029 posts)We have a low infection rate. Mainers traveling elsewhere don't have to quarantine. But if you come TO Maine from OTHER high-infection states, yes, you have to quarantine.
Our indoor event venues are limited to 50 people. Recently there was a wedding in Millinocket where they violated the state rules and that led to an outbreak -- but that was because the idiots violated the rules.
We are definitely not pandemic land.
